NIT and IIIT Admission Without JEE Main 2027: Alternative Routes Explained
Students looking for admission to an NIT or IIIT without JEE Main should first identify the exact institute, course and admission channel. For regular undergraduate BTech programmes at NITs and most IIITs participating in the NIT+ system, JEE Main remains the usual route through JoSAA counselling. Other options exist, but they apply to specific programmes or institutes and should not be treated as a general substitute for JEE Main.
As of October 29, 2026, the official 2027 admission notices and schedules have not been published on the sources listed below. The routes in this guide are based on official 2026 admission information and may change for 2027.
Which routes may be available?
| Route | Institute or programme | What applicants should know |
|---|---|---|
| JoSAA counselling | NITs and participating IIITs | Regular BTech, BArch and BPlanning admission uses the relevant JEE Main paper and counselling process. It is not a JEE Main-free route. |
| UGEE | IIIT Hyderabad dual-degree programmes | Applicants take IIIT Hyderabad’s entrance examination. Shortlisted candidates are interviewed. |
| Board-score channel | Some IIIT Hyderabad dual-degree programmes | The 2026 channel required at least 90% in Mathematics in Class 12 and included further selection. Check the next official notice for updated rules. |
| Other institute-specific channels | IIIT Hyderabad, for specified programmes | 2026 options included SPEC, LEEE, Olympiad and DASA. Each had separate eligibility and selection requirements; DASA used SAT scores. |
| NIMCET | MCA at participating NITs and IIITs | This is a postgraduate MCA entrance route, not an alternative entrance route for BTech. |

What applicants should do
If your goal is a regular BTech seat at an NIT, prepare for JEE Main and monitor JoSAA and CSAB announcements. If you are considering an IIIT, check its own College Admissions page: some institutes run separate processes, while others use JEE Main through JoSAA. For IIIT Hyderabad, confirm the programme and admission mode before applying, since its non-JEE routes are limited to specified courses. Applicants interested in MCA at participating NITs or IIITs can investigate NIMCET separately.
Do not pay an agent or accept claims of guaranteed admission. IIIT Hyderabad says undergraduate applications are handled through its official College Admissions portals. Verify eligibility, dates, fees and seat availability directly with the institute or counselling authority.
