KERALA UNIVERSITY OF DIGITAL SCIENCES INNOVATION AND TECHNOLOGY Summary
Kerala University of Digital Sciences, Innovation and Technology (Digital University Kerala or DUK) is a state public university focused on advanced digital technologies, interdisciplinary research and innovation. The institution emerged from the Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management–Kerala (IIITM-K), which the Government of Kerala had established in 2000 as a centre of excellence in information technology and related fields. To give the institute full university powers and a broader research mandate, the state upgraded it through an ordinance in 2020 and subsequently enacted the Kerala University of Digital Sciences, Innovation and Technology Act, 2021. The university operates from Technocity at Mangalapuram, Thiruvananthapuram. Its academic vision is organized around computing, intelligence, sustainability and entrepreneurship, with particular emphasis on using digital technology for social benefit. Teaching and research span computer science and engineering, electronic systems, digital sciences, informatics, digital humanities and other interdisciplinary areas shaped by data, artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. DUK’s structure is strongly research oriented: postgraduate and doctoral education are supported by research centres, externally funded projects, technology development, consultancy, innovation and entrepreneurship initiatives. The institution also continues the applied public-technology tradition of IIITM-K, whose work included e-governance and information-technology projects for Kerala. The university has received UGC recognition and relevant professional approval for applicable technical programmes. Its location within Kerala’s technology ecosystem creates opportunities for collaboration with government, industry, research organizations and startups. By combining advanced digital education with public-purpose research, Digital University Kerala positions itself not simply as an information-technology university, but as an interdisciplinary institution concerned with how digital systems can support sustainable development, governance, enterprise and social innovation. Its research-led model also encourages students to work across disciplinary boundaries, so that computing and artificial intelligence can be connected with electronics, public systems, sustainability, entrepreneurship and human-centred questions rather than treated as isolated technical subjects.
