MBBS Abroad: Check NMC Rules Before Following Consultant Advice
Indian students considering an MBBS-equivalent course abroad should verify the medical university, course structure and internship directly with official sources before paying a consultant or accepting an offer. The National Medical Commission (NMC) has warned students about foreign programmes that may not meet India’s requirements for registration. Its April 1, 2026 alert specifically concerned undergraduate medical courses in Uzbekistan and reminded students to check compliance with the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations, 2021.
This matters because completing a medical degree abroad does not by itself guarantee eligibility to practise in India. NMC guidance says deviations in course duration, medium of instruction, curriculum, clinical training or internship arrangements may affect a graduate’s eligibility for registration. Students should get written confirmation from the university itself and check requirements with the NMC and the relevant Indian authorities before enrolling.
Key NMC requirements to verify
| Area | What students should confirm |
|---|---|
| Course duration | At least 54 months of medical education at one institution under the FMGL requirements. |
| Internship | A 12-month internship at the same foreign institution, in addition to the required course duration. |
| Location of training | The course, clinical training and internship must meet the applicable rules; training cannot be split across institutions or countries where the regulations prohibit it. |
| Language | The medium of instruction must be English under the FMGL requirements. |
| Clinical curriculum | Check that the curriculum and hands-on clinical exposure cover the required medical subjects and align with the prescribed standards. |
| Practice eligibility | Verify the applicable screening or licensure examination and registration process for foreign medical graduates in India. |
Important dates
| Date | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| November 18, 2021 | The FMGL Regulations, 2021 were published and became effective. |
| April 1, 2026 | NMC issued an alert for Indian students seeking admission to undergraduate medical courses in Uzbekistan, reiterating due-diligence and compliance requirements. |
Questions to ask before paying
- Is the institution authorised to offer the medical qualification in its own country?
- Will the degree qualify the student to register or practise there, subject to that country’s rules?
- Are the course, clinical rotations and internship conducted in the locations and format required by NMC regulations?
- What is the complete fee schedule, including tuition, hostel, insurance, travel and other charges?
- Can the university provide its answers in writing, including the internship arrangements and medium of instruction?
Be cautious of promises that admission guarantees an Indian licence, that NMC has approved a consultant’s preferred university, or that a student can complete parts of the course in another country without affecting eligibility. The NMC says it does not endorse a general list of foreign medical universities. Confirm the exact course details with the institution and review the regulations that apply to the student’s admission year. For registration guidance, consult the NMC’s foreign medical qualification page and the relevant State Medical Council.
