RAIGANJ UNIVERSITY Summary
Raiganj University is a public state university in Uttar Dinajpur, West Bengal, established on 3 February 2015 by upgrading Raiganj College (University College). The predecessor institution had been founded in 1948 and served the region for decades as an undergraduate college, giving the new university an established academic community and a strong local identity from the outset. Created under the Raiganj University Act, 2014, the institution became the first unitary university in North Bengal to offer both undergraduate and postgraduate education on its own campus. This structure distinguishes it from universities that primarily coordinate affiliated colleges: students can enter at undergraduate level and continue through postgraduate and research study within the same institution. Academic departments span languages, humanities, social sciences, commerce, management, natural sciences, computer-related fields, sericulture and law. Several subjects preserve departmental traditions from the earlier college, while postgraduate and doctoral programs expanded after university status. The university’s location is especially important because Uttar Dinajpur has a largely rural economic base and includes communities for whom local access to advanced higher education can reduce financial and geographic barriers. Raiganj University has therefore emphasized inclusive education, research development and regionally relevant academic activity alongside conventional teaching. The institution supports laboratories, library services, research supervision, academic centres and student activities within a compact campus environment. Its evolution from an aided college to a state university is a significant example of institutional upgrading used to expand postgraduate and research opportunities in an underserved region. Official university information lists more than twenty departments at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with multiple departments also supporting doctoral research. The university began its new phase with a smaller set of departments and progressively broadened its academic range after 2015. Research and teaching remain closely connected within this framework. Student access and public service remain important institutional priorities.
