Jiwaji University, Gwalior Summary
Jiwaji University, Gwalior is a state public university in Madhya Pradesh whose establishment in the 1960s created a major higher-education centre for the Gwalior-Chambal region. The university came into existence on 23 May 1964 through Madhya Pradesh Government Ordinance No. 15 of 1963. Later that year, President of India Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan laid the foundation stone on 11 December 1964. The university developed on a campus of more than 225 acres at Naulakha Parade Ground, land associated with the contribution of the Scindia family, and was named in memory of Maharaja Jiwajirao Scindia. Its motto, "Vidyaya Prapyate Tejah," expresses the institution's emphasis on knowledge and intellectual development. From its early role as a regional university, Jiwaji University expanded into a broad multidisciplinary institution supporting teaching, research, examinations and affiliation. Its academic environment spans sciences, life sciences, humanities, social sciences, commerce, management, education, physical education, technology and professional studies. The university also serves a substantial network of affiliated colleges across its jurisdiction, giving it an important coordinating role in higher education beyond the main Gwalior campus. Research activity is supported through university teaching departments, laboratories, doctoral supervision and interdisciplinary academic work. The campus combines academic departments with student services, sports, library and administrative facilities. Over several decades, Jiwaji University has grown alongside the educational needs of northern Madhya Pradesh while retaining a strong regional identity linked to Gwalior. Its history connects a 1964 public-university foundation with continuing expansion in programmes, research, accreditation, student services and affiliated-college administration. From its 225-acre campus at Naulakha Parade Ground, the university developed teaching departments alongside a broad affiliated-college network serving the Gwalior-Chambal region. This dual teaching-and-affiliating structure has allowed Jiwaji University to combine campus-based postgraduate research with wider undergraduate access across north-central Madhya Pradesh and supporting regional academic mobility today.
