University of Greifswald (Greifswald University) Summary
The University of Greifswald is a public university for research located in Greifswald, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The University of Greifswald is a historic public research university in the Baltic region, comprising five faculties: Theology, Law and Economics, Medicine, Humanities, and Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Its institutional development includes 1456 — the opening ceremonially with papal approval of the Academia Gryphica. The citizens of Greifswald and their mayor, Heinrich Rubenow, were of key importance for the foundation. Today’s academic profile is shaped by theology, law, business, economics, languages, literature, history, philosophy, education, art, music, psychology, mathematics, computer science, physics, chemistry, biology, pharmacy, medicine, dentistry and Baltic and environmental research. Location is also important. The restored historic center and modern science and medical campuses put students in the middle of a compact Hanseatic city near the Baltic coast and in connection with University Medicine Greifswald, cultural institutions, regional employers and marine and environmental research networks.

Master’s committees may ask for module descriptions, portfolios, writing samples, professional experience, or interviews. Doctoral entry is separate from, but equivalent to, entry to a bachelor's or master's course and typically requires a viable research proposal, suitable supervision and formal acceptance by the appropriate faculty.
The university does not charge general tuition fees. A semester fee is paid by students for student services, representation and related benefits. The current amount is dependent on enrolment status and semester, so the live enrolment or re-registration notice governs the payment. These institutional fees do not include rent, health insurance, food, study materials, residence formalities, project fees or individual travel. Special tuition may be applied in the case of continuing-education, distance-learning, joint, second-degree or long-term study formats, if provided for by the relevant law or program regulation. Funding may include BAföG for eligible students, the Deutschlandstipendium, DAAD and Erasmus+ mobility support, foundations, research employment or university-specific awards, but each funding application is assessed independently from admission.
Career preparation is not a guarantyd placement scheme, but is a reflection of the subject mix of the university. Students may improve their professional readiness through internships, applied projects, research assistantships, employer events, language development, entrepreneurship services, international mobility and an externally partnered thesis.
