Shri Jagannath Sanskrit Vishwavidyalaya, Puri Summary
Shri Jagannath Sanskrit Vishvavidyalaya is a public state university in Puri, Odisha, created to preserve, teach and advance Sanskrit and India’s classical knowledge traditions. Established in 1981 under an Odisha state Act, the university is located at Shree Vihar in Puri and was among the early specialized Sanskrit universities established in India. Its academic identity combines traditional shastra-based learning with university-level research, teacher education, manuscript studies and modern academic support systems. The institution functions as both a teaching and affiliating university. On campus, its postgraduate teaching is organized through departments such as Advaita Vedanta, Dharmashastra, Jyotirvigyan, Vyakarana, Sahitya, Veda, Sarvadarshan and Nyaya. It also supports Shiksha Shastri teacher education and oversees Sanskrit colleges offering programmes such as Upashastri and Shastri across Odisha. A distinctive feature is the Centre of Advanced Research in Sanskrit, which supports higher scholarship and publication. The university also operates a publication wing that brings out research works and periodicals, while a Manuscript Resource Centre contributes to the survey and documentation of manuscript heritage in collaboration with national initiatives. Student and academic support has included career counselling, computer applications, coaching facilities, NSS activities, health services and study-centre functions. The university’s foundation stone was laid on 7 July 1981, and its development has been closely tied to Odisha’s effort to sustain formal Sanskrit education at multiple levels. Through teaching, affiliation, research and manuscript preservation, Shri Jagannath Sanskrit Vishvavidyalaya serves as a specialized centre for Sanskrit scholarship while also linking classical studies with teacher preparation and wider cultural research. The campus at Shree Vihar also provides a setting for seminars, cultural activities and advanced study connected with Odisha’s Sanskrit heritage. Its statewide affiliating role allows the university to influence curriculum, examinations and academic standards well beyond Puri, sustaining a formal pathway from traditional Sanskrit schooling to higher research.
