Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz is a public university located in Mainz, Rhineland-Palatinate. JGU Mainz is a large, comprehensive university in Germany and combines natural sciences, humanities, social sciences, economics, law, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, art, music and sport under one roof. 1477 — The original University of Mainz opened under Archbishop Diether von Isenburg. 16th century – early university formed by theology, law, medicine, philosophy. Today its academic profile is represented by the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, law, economics, media, translation, music, art and sport. The geographical location is significant because Mainz is the capital of Rhineland-Palatinate as well as a city in the Rhine-Main region, and students have access to media organisations, public institutions, hospitals, research institutes, cultural employers, and the wider Frankfurt labour market.
This master file contains 36 undergraduate entries and 36 postgraduate entries representing its course portfolio. Subject combinations are grouped under their parent degrees as appropriate. Undergraduate courses include Archaeology, Art History, Audiovisual Publishing, Biology, Biomedical Chemistry, Business Administration and Economics. Later courses include Sport Science, Translation Studies, Theology. Postgraduate study includes: American Studies, Anthropology, Applied Bioinformatics, Biochemistry, Biomedical Chemistry, Book Studies, Sound and Music, Translation, Teacher Education. Every course is still a parent qualification . Specialisations are hidden inside the course entry , not misrepresented as separate degrees . JGU has 75 subjects and more than 250 degree programs. In this file, teacher-education subjects and multi-subject combinations are aggregated under their parent fields, so that combinations are not counted as separate qualifications.
Admission is regulated at the program level. Applicants with international certificates usually get JGU’s certificate of recognition before applying via JOGU-StINe. Medicine, dentistry and pharmacy can also apply via the nationwide hochschulstart procedure. Before applying, applicants must check language of instruction, entry semester, subject pre-requisites, selection procedure and document route. International school or university qualifications may have to be externally assessed, translated and certified and for some countries, accompanied by APS documentation and/or further evidence of academic equivalence. Master’s committees may require module descriptions, portfolios, writing samples, professional experience or interviews. Admission to doctoral programs is independent of admission to bachelor's or master's programs and normally demands a viable research proposal, eligible supervision and formal acceptance by the relevant faculty.
First degree is generally fee free. The Mainz semester contribution for summer 2026 was €349.10. Depending on state regulations, additional fees may apply to students who are above the statutory age limit or enrolled in certain special formats. These institutional fees do not cover rent, health insurance, food, learning materials, residence formalities, project costs or personal travel. If provided for by the relevant law or program regulation, special tuition may be provided for continuing-education, distance-learning, joint, second-degree, or long-term study formats. Funding (e.g. BAföG for eligible students, Deutschlandstipendium, DAAD and Erasmus+ mobility support, foundations, research employment or university-specific awards) is available, but each funding application is evaluated separately from admission.
Career preparation reflects the subject mix of the university and is not a guarantyd placement scheme. The Rhine-Main location and JGU’s medical center, research institutes, media links, cultural institutions, public administration, schools and networks of technology are the foundation for a variety of professional contexts.
