The University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, located in Hannover, Lower Saxony, is a public veterinary university. The University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover is a specialised veterinary university in Germany and integrates veterinary education, animal biology, clinical services, biomedical research, animal welfare, food safety and One Health. 1778 The Royal Roß-Arzney-Schule was founded in Hannover: the institutional development of the veterinary profession. 18th century — early instruction was in veterinary medicine and the needs of the military. Today, its academic profile is shaped by veterinary medicine, animal biology, biomedical science, infection, animal health, clinical practice, food safety, animal welfare, epidemiology and One Health. The site is important because Hannover and Lower Saxony are home to large veterinary clinics, agricultural and food industries, animal-health companies, biomedical research institutes, public laboratories, wildlife organisations and regulatory agencies.
The course portfolio submitted in this master file contains 2 undergraduate entries and 4 postgraduate entries. Where appropriate, subject combinations are grouped under their parent degrees. Examples: Veterinary Medicine State Exam, Biology. Examples: Veterinary Medicine State Exam, Biology. Animal Biology and Biomedical Sciences, Veterinary Public Health, Animal Welfare and Behaviour, One Health and Infection Biology, Veterinary Public Health, Animal Welfare and Behaviour, One Health and Infection Biology. Postgraduate study Courses are still a parent qualification and specialisations are stored within the course entry rather than pretending to be separate degrees. The institution has a deliberately narrow portfolio: the veterinary State Examination, a biology bachelor route, selected research-oriented master’s degrees, clinical training and a number of doctoral qualifications.
Admission is controlled at the program level. Veterinary medicine has national and university entrance routes. Non-EU applicants with qualifications from abroad normally use uni-assist, other programs use the portal and procedure outlined on the course page. Applicants should consult the language of instruction, entry semester, subject prerequisites, selection process and document route before applying. International school or university qualifications may have to be externally assessed, translated and certified and for some countries, accompanied by APS documentation and/or further evidence of academic equivalence. Master’s committees may require module descriptions, portfolios, writing samples, professional experience or interviews. Admission to a doctorate is different from admission to a bachelor's or master's degree and typically depends on a viable research proposal, eligible supervision and formal acceptance by the responsible faculty.
General tuition is not for normal study. For the semester 2026/27 the semester fee is €443.20. This includes the student services, administration, the Germany semester ticket, student representation, culture and bicycle-workshop contributions. The institutional fees do not cover rent, health insurance, food, learning materials, residence formalities, project costs or personal travel. If provided for by the relevant law or program regulation, special tuition may be provided for continuing-education, distance-learning, joint, second-degree, or long-term study formats. Funding (e.g. BAföG for eligible students, Deutschlandstipendium, DAAD and Erasmus+ mobility support, foundations, research employment or university-specific awards) is available, but each funding application is evaluated separately from admission.
Career preparation is a reflection of the subject mix of the university and not a placement scheme. Graduate employment in clinics, veterinary practices, public laboratories, agriculture, food safety, animal-health and pharmaceutical companies, zoos and wildlife bodies, regulatory agencies and biomedical research. Internships, applied projects, research assistantships, employer events, language development, entrepreneurship services, international mobility and an externally partnered thesis are all opportunities for students to enhance their professional readiness. The TiHo Hannover is most suitable for students who are interested in animal health, veterinary clinical activities, biomedical research, food safety, animal welfare or the interface of One Health.
