Universität Vechta Summary
The University of Vechta is a small public university in Lower Saxony with an academic profile in the areas of people, education, social services, ageing, culture, sustainability and the transformation of rural regions. It started out as a teacher training institution in 1830 and teacher training is still one of its defining responsibilities. But the university has developed a more diverse portfolio, which includes Social Work, Management of Social Services, Gerontology, Cultural Studies, social innovation and rural transformation. It is this emphasis that differentiates Vechta from comprehensive universities, which split their resources between medicine, engineering, law and the natural sciences. Its topics are deliberately focused on social and educational issues and on organisations which respond to demographic and regional change. Its location in a major agricultural region also provides it with a direct local context for rural research.

Vechta’s compact campus means smaller learning groups and direct access to advising. Career preparation is most effective when the curriculum is linked to schools, welfare organisations, local government, social and health services, cultural institutions and rural-development agencies. Applicants should choose Vechta because of its focus on social mission and individual scale, not the scope of a large, technical or research-intensive metropolitan university.
