TH Köln – University of Applied Sciences Summary
TH Köln – University of Applied Sciences is a public university of applied sciences in Cologne, Nordrhein-Westfalen. TH Köln is a large research-intensive university of applied sciences with a remarkably broad disciplinary portfolio and three campuses in Cologne, Gummersbach and Leverkusen. Its institutional history includes 1971 – the Fachhochschule Köln was founded through the merger of predecessor institutions. 1970s – engineering, arts, library, social and business traditions merged. Today the profile of the university is formed by the natural sciences, engineering, computing, design, media, information, business, social work, culture and environment. The setting matters. The Cologne region combines media, insurance, manufacturing, public services, culture and a large international labour market.
The current study portfolio in this file includes 40 undergraduate and 49 postgraduate entries. Undergraduate studies: Applied Chemistry, Architecture, Business Administration, Business Administration and Engineering, Business Information Systems, Spatial Development and Infrastructure Systems, Supply Chain and Operations Management, Vehicle Development. Examples at postgraduate level are: 3D Animation for Film and Games, Applied Chemistry, Architecture, Auditing, Taxation, Law and Finance, Automation and IT and Terminology and Language Technology, Town Planning and Urban Development, Web Science. These program names are kept at the course level, and concentrations and academic themes are listed separately as specialisations. The official catalogue lists more than ninety programs, including campus-specific, cooperative, interdisciplinary and international routes.
As language, semester start, academic prerequisites and selection rules vary, applicants are required to begin by visiting the live program page. The application route depends on your citizenship, your qualification, the admission restriction and the program. International applicants should strictly follow the instructions of TH Köln and uni-assist. International qualifications may have to be assessed via a special credential-review route. Applicants for a master’s may be asked to provide module descriptions so the responsible committee can compare prior coursework with the degree they are applying for. Admission is not the same as enrolment: an admitted applicant still needs to complete the document, health-insurance and payment steps mentioned in the offer. Doctoral study, under faculty, graduate school or cooperative arrangements, requires an appropriate project and academic supervision.
Normal consecutive study normally doesn’t involve tuition. TH Köln charges a semester contribution of €352.70 for the winter semester 2026/27. Tuition may be charged for continuing education and selected special programs. There are still course-specific exceptions, especially for professional and continuing-education, joint or cooperative study. Students should, therefore, budget for costs in addition to the published institutional charge for housing, insurance, learning materials, travel, and any program-specific costs. The funding can be provided through BAföG if you meet the requirements, the Deutschlandstipendium, foundations, mobility grants, project employment or doctoral support. However, every funding has its own application and selection process.
Career preparation is a reflection of the university’s academic profile, not a guarantee of placement. Employer environments in media, insurance, engineering, pharmaceuticals, logistics, culture and public services are located in Gummersbach and Leverkusen. Internships, applied projects, research assistantships, employer events, entrepreneurship support, international experience and early access to career counselling can all improve student outcomes. TH Köln is particularly suitable for students who want a large applied catalogue and multidisciplinary study in the Cologne region. The best candidates will compare their previous academic education with curriculum, language of instruction, entry criteria and location before applying.
