Admission is regulated at program level. Applicants apply via the HIO portal. Many candidates with foreign qualifications go through the international evaluation route of the university. Restricted programs, dual study, part-time formats and entry in higher semesters have their own requirements and deadlines. Applicants must, before submission, verify the teaching language, entry semester, subject prerequisites, selection method and document path. International School or University Qualifications External evaluation, certified translations, APS documentation where applicable or other proof of academic equivalence may be required. Master’s committees may ask for module descriptions, portfolios, writing samples, professional experience, or interviews. Doctoral entry is independent of bachelor’s or master’s admission and generally requires a viable research proposal, suitable supervision and formal acceptance by the faculty responsible for the doctoral program.
There is no general tuition for regular degrees. The semester contribution is 371.30 € for winter 2026/27 (including 120 € for student services, 24.50 € for the student body and 226.80 € for the Germany semester ticket). Certain part-time formats are charged a reduced or separate fee. These institutional fees exclude accommodation, health insurance, meals, learning materials, residence formalities, project costs or personal travel. Special tuition may be applied in the case of continuing-education, distance-learning, joint, second-degree or long-term study formats, if provided for by the relevant law or program regulation. Funding may include BAföG for eligible students, the Deutschlandstipendium, DAAD and Erasmus+ mobility support, foundations, research employment or university-specific awards, but each funding application is assessed independently from admission.
The university’s subject mix, rather than a guarantyd placement scheme, is a function of career preparation. Manufacturers in the Lower Rhine region, textile and fashion enterprises, chemical companies, hospitals, food producers, logistics companies, public institutions and social organisations support practical study and research. Students may improve their professional readiness through internships, applied projects, research assistantships, employer events, language development, entrepreneurship services, international mobility, and an externally partnered thesis
