Technische Universität Clausthal Summary
Technische Universität Clausthal is a public technical university located in the Upper Harz region of Lower Saxony. Its roots go back to 1775 when professional education for mining and metallurgy evolved in Clausthal and that resource-based foundation still provides the institution with a recognisable academic identity. The present university is no more just mining orientated. Its degree portfolio connects energy, raw materials, materials science, mechanical and process engineering, chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science, artificial intelligence, digital technologies and technology-oriented business. This leads to a small technical university with programs orientated toward industrial transformation: how energy is produced and used, materials are developed and recycled, manufacturing becomes digital, and technical decisions interact with economics and environmental responsibility.
The current catalogue lists 18 bachelor’s and 19 master’s programs. For undergraduates, there are no entrance exams. This means that, if you fulfil the university entrance qualification and language requirements, a complete and timely application will usually be successful. Most bachelor's degrees are set up over six semesters, and most master's programs are organised over four semesters. The catalogue contains both newly developed subjects such as AI Engineering, Digital Management, Geo-Energy Systems, Sustainable Energy Technology and Systems, and Sustainable Raw Material Extraction and Recycling, and long-established disciplines such as Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mathematics. A number of programs are also available to study part-time, however applicants should check the exact catalogue entry as the language, semester start and subject prerequisites vary.
International applicants apply via the university’s own digital application route. Applications are submitted electronically through the institution’s system starting December 15, 2025. The university also charges a fee for the evaluation of foreign educational credentials. The general published deadline for the winter semester 2026/27 is October 15 for bachelor programs and October 1 for master programs, unless the program regulation is stricter. Applicants for a master’s will need to have a relevant first degree and may be assessed against particular prior modules. Doctoral candidates work in an engineering, natural science, economics or interdisciplinary research field with the faculty or doctoral regulations and have to set up academic supervision.
General tuition fees do not apply to regular degree programs. The published semester contribution amounts to €242 (including student-services, administrative and student-body components). After the statutory study credit has been used up, a long-term-study fee may be charged in the amount of €500. Doctoral candidates are exempt from this long-term fee. Continuing-education study may be subject to separate fees. The university’s location gives a small-campus feel, with direct contact between students, laboratories, institutes and professors. The career preparation is closely connected to research projects, laboratories, industrial internships, engineering employers as well as the university’s alumni and startup activities. TU Clausthal therefore fits well for applicants who are looking for a concentrated technical university with an extraordinary depth of resources, circular systems, energy transition, materials and industrial digitalisation. It is less appropriate for students seeking a large metropolitan comprehensive university, and each prospective student should compare the exact program language and prerequisites before applying.
