The Städelschule is a public academy of fine arts in Frankfurt am Main, Hesse. Städelschule is a public fine-art academy in Frankfurt, internationally-oriented, with a small class structure, experimental artistic education, public programs, Portikus exhibitions, and a joint master’s in curatorial studies. 1815 – Frankfurt banker and merchant Johann Friedrich Städel establishes the endowment that will found the institution. Its institutional development includes 1817 – the Städelschule started to fulfilll the educational purpose stated in Städel’s will. Its academic profile today is defined by fine art, painting, sculpture, installation, moving image, photography, sound, performance, digital practice, art history, art theory, curatorial studies, exhibition making and artistic research. The location is important; the Dürerstraße campus and exhibition relationships expose students to Frankfurt’s museum, gallery, art-fair, publishing and international financial-city environment, while Portikus is a prominent venue for contemporary artistic practice and public exchange.
This master file represents the course portfolio of 1 undergraduate entries and 1 postgraduate entries, with subject combinations grouped under their parent degrees where appropriate. Examples at the undergraduate level are Fine Art, and later entries are Fine Art. Postgraduate study includes the following: Curatorial Studies – Theory, History and Criticism, Curatorial Studies – Theory, History and Criticism. Every course is still a parent qualification. Specialisations are contained within the course entry and not falsely represented as another degree. The entire Fine Art course is a long-cycle academy qualification and not a typical bachelor’s degree. Curatorial Studies is a two year joint Master of Arts. The school doesn't have an independent doctoral degree.
Control of admission at the program level. Applicants to full-time Fine Art must submit the required digital application and portfolio within the published annual window and are subject to faculty selection. For the Curatorial Studies program you need a first degree in a related field, academic and curatorial credentials and you need to be selected according to the joint program rules. Applicants are required to check language of teaching, entry semester, subject prerequisites, selection procedure and document route before submitting applications. International School or University Qualifications External evaluation, certified translations, APS documentation where applicable or other proof of academic equivalence may be required. Master’s committees may ask for module descriptions, portfolios, writing samples, professional experience, or interviews. Doctoral admission is separate from bachelor's or master's admission and usually requires a valid research proposal, suitable supervision and formal acceptance by the relevant faculty.
There are no regular tuition fees. The overall costs for the semester abroad Fine Art and the exchange semester is €346,80 including the Germany semester ticket. In Frankfurt, materials, production, exhibitions, travel, insurance and living costs are still extra. These institutional charges do not include rent, health insurance, food, learning materials, residence formalities, project costs or personal travel. Special tuition may be applied in the case of continuing-education, distance-learning, joint, second-degree or long-term study formats, if provided for by the relevant law or program regulation. Funding may include BAföG for eligible students, the Deutschlandstipendium, DAAD and Erasmus+ mobility support, foundations, research employment or university-specific awards, but each funding application is assessed independently from admission.
Career preparation is not a guarantyd placement scheme but reflects the subject mix of the university. Class critiques, workshops, visiting artists, lectures, Rundgang, graduate exhibitions, Portikus, publications, exchanges and Frankfurt’s galleries and museums offer students the means to build practices and networks outside a traditional guarantyd placement system. Students develop professional readiness through internships, applied projects, research assistantships, employer events, language development, entrepreneurship services, international mobility and an externally partnered thesis.
