The Sambalpur College Act was passed by the Odisha Lawmaking body on tenth December, 1966 to satisfy long loved dream of individuals of Western Odisha for foundation of a College. The College began working from first January, 1967 with Prof. As the first Vice-Chancellor, Parsuram Mishra The College was initiated on fourth January, 1967 by Hon'ble Chancellor A.N.Khosla. The College began working in 1967 in a leased confidential structure at Dhanupali, Sambalpur and in Government working at Ainthapali, Sambalpur from 1968 - 72. In the year 1973 the College was moved to the current grounds named Jyoti Vihar at Burla.
About The University
The Sambalpur University Act was passed by the Odisha Legislature on 10th December, 1966 to fulfill long cherished dream of the people of Western Odisha for establishment of a University. The University started functioning from 1st January, 1967 with Prof.Parsuram Mishra as the first Vice-Chancellor. The University was inaugurated on 4th January, 1967 by Hon'ble Chancellor A.N.Khosla. The University started functioning in 1967 in a rented private building at Dhanupali, Sambalpur and in Government building at Ainthapali, Sambalpur from 1968 - 72. In the year 1973 the University was shifted to the present campus named Jyoti Vihar at Burla.
The territorial jurisdiction of the University covers 6
districts of the state of Odisha namely Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Bargarh, Boudh and Athamallik Sub-Division of Angul District.
The University at Jyoti Vihar provides Post-Graduate education in Twenty-seven subjects through Twenty Post-Graduate Departments.
The University Post-Graduate Departments offer one-year study Programme for M.Phil Degree, two years study programme for the Degrees of M.A. / M.Sc. / LL.M. / Business Administration / M.Lib & Inf.Science, One-Year P.G. Diploma Course in Computer Science & Application and Diploma Course in Sambalpuri Studies and Three-Year course in M.C.A. and Executive M.B.A.
The P.G.Departments of Chemistry, Life Sciences, History, Economics, Library & Information Sciences and Mathematics have been conferred Autonomous Status by the University. They adopt Semester system based on continuous evaluation. They adopt their own courses of studies.
There are Ten Post-Graduate Hostels in the University Campus out of which four are Ladies Hostels and six are Gents' Hostels. The University provide several facilities to the boarders in the Hostels like Common Room with T.V., Reading Room with Newspaper and Magazine, Guest Room, First Aid, STD Telephone booth, etc. The Central Canteen has been opened near the Hostel Campus for the benefit of students. Besides there are two Nationalized Banks, one Post-Office, one Health Centre, one Auditorium, one Police-Out Post, one Faculty House and one Community Centre have been established in the University Campus for providing services to students/teachers and employees in the Campus.
The establishment of Directorate of Distance Education (DEC), Private Education Cell (PEC), One Nodal Computer Centre, Academic Staff College, University Yoga Centre, Professor Bhubaneswar Behera Central Library are acting like the wheels for the University system and would carry the University speedily towards achieving the noble boon for which these are set up.
The Directorate of Distance and Continuing Education has started in the year 1998 with only on-campus courses in collaboration with P.G. Departments of Sambalpur University.
In the year 2000 the Directorate of Distance and Continuing Education has launched BCA, PGDCA and PGDIT courses.

Sambalpur University Admission Procedure
- The minimum eligibility for applying in Ph.D. is a Master’s degree with 55% marks in it.
- The selection will be made on written test and the csndidates qualifying the written test will be called for the viva voce.
- Under regular courses, for applying in M.A., M.Sc., MPA, M.A./M.Sc., M.L.I.Sc. and L.L.M. the candidate must have done graduation with 45% marks with the relevant subjects and in the relevant discipline.
- Under self financing courses, for applying in M.A, M.Sc., MSW, M.Tech. and M.B.A., the candidate should have a degree of graduation in the related field with 45% marks.
- The candidate will be given admission under self financing and regular both, on the basis of Entrance test and the academic record.
- Under MBA, the candidate will be given exemption from entrance test and will be taken into consideration on the basis of marks in MAT. Then the marks in MAT exam/Entrance Test and the academic record will become the basis of selection.
Sambalpur University PG Regular courses Admission 2024
Sambalpur University offers M.A., M.Sc., MPA, M.A./M.Sc., M.L.I.Sc. and L.L.M. at the postgraduate level. All the PG level courses are for a duration of two years.
The M.A. course is offered with seven different specialization subjects, the M.Sc. course is offered with seven different specialization subjects and the M.A./M.Sc. course is offered with four different specialization subjects. The minimum eligibility for all the masters courses is a pass in graduation in the respective field of study with the candidate having at least 45% marks, except for LLM under which the candidate must have done Graduation in Law under 5 year integrated LLB Course/3 year LL.B course.
Selection
Selection for admission into different Courses shall be done through Written Entrance Test (with coding and decoding system), and Career marks weightage to which should be given as follows:
- Written Entrance Test - 70%
- Career Marks - 30%
For admission to Master’s in Performing Arts (MPA), weightages shall be given as follows:
- Written Entrance Test - 30%
- Career Marks 30%
- Performance and Viva-Voce 30%
- Experience in Performing Arts 10%

The present campus of the university is located at Burla, 2 km away from NH 6. The campus of this university is in the vicinity of Mahanadi Coal Fields Limited, VSSUT and located close to Hirakud Dam.
Sambalpur University is located at Burla town, Odisha. The university is spread over 670 acre surrounded by dense reserve forest of Burla town. This university is said to be one of the knowledge hub of Odisha.
There are postgraduate hostels in the university campus out of which seven are for girls (Narmada Ladies hostel, Pravavati Devi Ladies Hostel, Silver Jubilee ladies hostel, M.C.L Coalfield Ladies hostel (new), Baitarani Ladies Hostel, Indravati Ladies Hostel, I.I.M-S Ladies Hostel) and eight are for boys (Bramhaputra Boys Hostel, Mahanadi Boys Hostel, Bhagirathi Boys Hostel, Academic Staff Hostel, Mahodadhi M.phil Hostel, Golden Jubilee Boys Hostel, I.I.M-S Boys Hostel, I.B hostel or SC/ST/OBC Boys Hostel).
