VEER SURENDRA SAI INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES AND RESEARCH Summary
Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) is a government medical teaching and research institution at Burla in Sambalpur district, Odisha. Its roots go back to 1959, when the state decided to establish a second medical college in Odisha to serve western parts of the state. The new institution began as Burla Medical College with an initial group of MBBS students transferred from SCB Medical College, Cuttack. Early teaching took place in modest facilities near the Hirakud project area while permanent academic, hospital and residential infrastructure was developed. The institution gained Medical Council recognition in 1966 after a period of rapid faculty and infrastructure expansion under its early leadership. In 1967–68, Burla Medical College adopted the name Veer Surendra Sai Medical College, honoring the nineteenth-century freedom fighter associated with western Odisha. Over subsequent decades, the campus added important facilities including a Veer Surendra Sai statue, specialized clinical buildings, an auditorium, radiotherapy services, a central library, diagnostic facilities and trauma and burns units. A major governance change occurred when the Government of Odisha declared the medical college and hospital an autonomous institute with effect from 1 January 2015. The institution then became Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, with a broader mandate for medical education, advanced clinical care and research. VIMSAR operates as a teaching hospital complex as well as a medical education institution, supporting undergraduate, postgraduate and specialty training while serving patients from western Odisha and neighboring regions. Its location at Ayurvihar, Burla, close to the Hirakud Dam and other major educational institutions, reflects the area’s long development as an academic and health-care center. The institute therefore has a dual regional function: training successive generations of medical professionals and acting as a major referral and clinical-care center for a broad population beyond Sambalpur district.
