Rani Channamma University, Belagavi Summary
Rani Channamma University, now styled Kitturu Rani Channamma University, is a public state university in Belagavi serving northern Karnataka. It was established by the Government of Karnataka in September 2010 by upgrading the Kittur Rani Channamma Post Graduate Centre of Karnatak University, Dharwad, which had operated in Belagavi since 1982. The university is named after Kittur Rani Channamma, the nineteenth-century queen remembered for armed resistance to British rule in 1824. Its main Vidyasangama campus lies on a large green site near Bhutaramanahatti outside Belagavi, close to the Pune-Bengaluru highway. The university was created to expand access to higher education in North Karnataka and inherited a substantial affiliated-college network from Karnatak University. Direct academic activity is organized through postgraduate departments and schools spanning humanities, social sciences, sciences, commerce, management, education and interdisciplinary fields. Research, doctoral study, student support and extension programs complement the university’s large affiliation responsibilities. Over time, jurisdictional changes have altered the exact college network, but the university remains a major higher-education institution for Belagavi and surrounding areas. Its identity combines the legacy of the earlier postgraduate centre with the wider teaching, research, examination and affiliation responsibilities of an independent state university. The 2010 university notification initially transferred hundreds of colleges from Karnatak University into the new institution’s jurisdiction. The Vidyasangama campus extends across roughly 178 acres and supports postgraduate teaching, research and central administration. UGC recognition under Sections 2(f) and 12(B) supports the university’s role in publicly funded higher education and research. The university’s current official styling emphasizes “Kitturu” Rani Channamma while the source workbook retains the earlier Rani Channamma University name. The institution continues to develop this role through public higher education, academic administration and student services. Its regional responsibilities remain closely connected with access, quality assurance, research and long-term institutional development.
