Mangalore University, Mangalore Summary
Mangalore University is a state public university in Karnataka serving the coastal and Kodagu regions of the state. Established on 10 September 1980, it grew out of a postgraduate centre of the University of Mysore and developed into an independent teaching, research and affiliating university. Its principal campus, Mangalagangothri, lies about 20 kilometres southeast of Mangaluru and occupies more than 350 acres in a landscape overlooking the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats. The setting is one of the university's most recognizable features and supports a residential academic environment away from the city centre. From an initial postgraduate base with only a few departments, the university expanded into a multidisciplinary institution with teaching and research across the humanities, languages, social sciences, commerce, management, physical and biological sciences and other fields. It also carries significant responsibility for colleges in its regional jurisdiction. Mangalore University has constituent and autonomous institutions within its academic system and has extended postgraduate education to Kodagu through the Jnana Kaveri postgraduate centre at Chikka Aluvara. That centre reflects the university's attempt to address geographic barriers between the coastal districts and the hill district of Kodagu. Research and doctoral education form an important part of the university's role, with departments supporting advanced study, externally funded projects, laboratories, libraries and scholarly publication. The institution's history also links newer university structures with older colleges of coastal Karnataka, giving it an academic community broader than the main campus alone. Its location in a linguistically and culturally diverse region influences study in languages, history, ecology and regional development as well as conventional disciplines. More than four decades after becoming an independent university, Mangalore University remains a major public higher-education institution for Dakshina Kannada and adjoining areas, combining postgraduate teaching, research, affiliation responsibilities and regional outreach. Regionally anchored today.
