Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak Summary
Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak is a state public teaching-cum-affiliating university whose statutory origins lie in the Haryana legislation enacted in 1975 and brought into force on 19 April 1976. It began as Rohtak University with a special emphasis on interdisciplinary higher education and research, particularly in life sciences, environmental studies, and ecological sciences. In 1977, the institution was renamed Maharshi Dayanand University in honor of the social reformer and educationist Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati. The university’s institutional character also changed during its early development. It started as a unitary and residential university, became an affiliating university in November 1978, and later secured University Grants Commission recognition under Sections 2(f) and 12(B) in 1983. These transitions established the foundation for a university that combines campus teaching, research, and affiliation responsibilities. Located in Rohtak, the university developed a large residential campus with academic blocks, hostels, libraries, sports facilities, student services, and research infrastructure. Its academic scope expanded far beyond its original scientific emphasis and now encompasses humanities, social sciences, commerce, management, education, law, engineering, technology, life sciences, and other disciplines. Postgraduate and doctoral work is a significant part of its academic system. MDU’s proximity to Delhi and its role in Haryana’s higher-education network have helped it serve a broad population of students and affiliated institutions. The university’s history is marked by steady institutional expansion: changes in legal status, widening academic disciplines, development of campus infrastructure, and growth of research and professional education. Its public mandate continues to combine access, affiliation, teaching, research, and professional preparation within one of Haryana’s long-established state university systems. Its campus departments, regional facilities, affiliated colleges, and research programmes make MDU an important academic hub for Haryana, covering undergraduate regulation, postgraduate education, doctoral scholarship, professional preparation, student development, extension, and many wider public-university responsibilities.
