MADHUSUDAN LAW UNIVERSITY Summary
Madhusudan Law University is a state public law university in Cuttack, Odisha, established on 28 April 2021 and named in honour of Utkal Gouraba Madhusudan Das, the first graduate and first advocate of Odisha. The university emerged from the historic Madhusudan Law College campus near Cuttack Railway Station and was created as a specialised institution for legal education, research and affiliation across the state. From the date of its establishment, government and private law colleges in Odisha, other than constituent law colleges of other universities, came under its affiliating framework. This gives the university a dual role: it directly teaches law programs at its own campus while also regulating a statewide network of affiliated legal-education institutions. Its academic offerings include the five-year integrated B.A. LL.B. (Honours), three-year LL.B., LL.M. and Ph.D. programs, with professional legal education aligned to relevant regulatory requirements. The campus has academic and administrative blocks, classrooms and a developing library with print and digital legal resources. Moot-court, seminar and research activity form an important part of its academic environment, reflecting the practical and analytical demands of legal training. The Government of Odisha has supported expansion of the university’s infrastructure, including additional academic, administrative and student facilities at its existing and planned campus spaces. The institution also carries forward the legacy of the earlier law college, which produced generations of advocates, judges and legal professionals. Its location in Cuttack, a major judicial centre and the seat of the Orissa High Court, gives students proximity to an important legal ecosystem. Madhusudan Law University’s relatively recent statutory creation therefore rests on a much older tradition of legal education. Its current development combines professional teaching, postgraduate study, doctoral research, affiliation, examination administration and the gradual construction of a dedicated state-level centre for legal scholarship.
