Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra Summary
Kurukshetra University is one of Haryana's oldest state public universities and has developed from a small residential institution into a large multidisciplinary center for teaching, research and affiliation. The university was established in 1956, and its foundation stone was laid by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India. It began with a strong emphasis on Sanskrit and Indological learning, reflecting the historical and cultural setting of Kurukshetra, before expanding into sciences, humanities, social sciences, commerce, education, law, engineering-related studies and professional programs. The campus is located near Brahma Sarovar and extends across more than 400 acres. Over the decades, numerous departments, research centers, hostels, laboratories, sports facilities and student-support institutions were created as enrollment and academic breadth increased. The Department of History, founded in 1961, became one of the university's notable centers of historical research and has been associated with distinguished scholars in Indian and regional history. Kurukshetra University also developed a substantial affiliating role across Haryana, supporting undergraduate education through a network of colleges while maintaining postgraduate and doctoral teaching on campus. The university has repeatedly undergone national quality assessment and has held high NAAC accreditation, reflecting its mature institutional systems and research profile. Its mission combines advanced scholarship with professional education and public service. The location in a city of major historical and religious significance has shaped work in Sanskrit, philosophy, history, culture and archaeology, while modern faculties address science, technology, management and contemporary social issues. Kurukshetra University's evolution since 1956 illustrates how a specialized residential university can grow into a broad public university without losing the cultural identity of its founding environment. It remains a major academic institution for Haryana and northern India. The university also maintains extensive residential, sports, library, health and cultural facilities that support a large campus community.
