Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot Summary
Baba Farid University of Health Sciences is a public health sciences university headquartered in Faridkot, Punjab. It was established by the Punjab State Legislature in July 1998 and named after the revered Punjabi Sufi saint Baba Farid. The university was created to improve the quality, coordination and development of medical and health-professional education in Punjab through a dedicated statewide institution. At the time of its establishment, it was described as the fifth university of health sciences in India and the first of its kind in northern India. Its role extends well beyond one teaching campus. BFUHS affiliates and oversees institutions offering medicine, dentistry, nursing, physiotherapy and other health-science programmes and coordinates examinations, academic regulations, degree processes and institutional standards. The university’s degrees received recognition by the Governor of Punjab with effect from 1 July 1999, while programme recognition also operates through the relevant national professional councils and regulatory frameworks. BFUHS has developed teaching and clinical institutions of its own while simultaneously functioning as the principal health-sciences affiliating university for Punjab. Its academic environment links classroom learning with laboratories, hospitals and clinical training because professional health education requires substantial practical experience. The institution participates in national and international university networks, including the Association of Indian Universities and the Association of Commonwealth Universities, and is recognized under the University Grants Commission framework. Its headquarters in Faridkot place the university within the Malwa region, but its academic reach extends across Punjab through affiliated health institutions. Research, postgraduate specialization, continuing professional education and examination administration are important parts of its work. For students, BFUHS is distinctive because it provides a specialist university structure for multiple health professions. Whether studying medicine, dentistry, nursing or an allied discipline, students operate within a university system designed specifically around healthcare education, professional standards, clinical learning, research and the award of recognized health-science qualifications.
