CLAT 2027 Subjects and Syllabus Explained: Check Section-Wise Topics and Preparation Tips
CLAT 2027 Subjects and Syllabus: Candidates preparing for the Common Law Admission Test can now plan their preparation around the official UG-CLAT 2027 structure published by the Consortium of National Law Universities. The undergraduate examination tests candidates across five major subject areas: English Language, Current Affairs including General Knowledge, Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning and Quantitative Techniques.
The Consortium has designed CLAT primarily as a comprehension and reasoning-based aptitude test rather than an examination requiring extensive prior legal knowledge. Most sections revolve around passages, factual situations, arguments or numerical information, followed by questions testing a candidate’s ability to understand, interpret, infer and apply information.
CLAT 2027 is scheduled to be conducted on Sunday, December 6, 2026, from 2 PM to 4 PM, subject to revision if necessary. Eligible PwD candidates are scheduled to receive additional time according to the official instructions.
The undergraduate paper will contain 120 multiple-choice questions carrying one mark each. Candidates will lose 0.25 marks for every incorrect response.

CLAT 2027 Subjects and Syllabus: Highlights
CLAT 2027 Subjects
The UG-CLAT 2027 question paper contains questions from the following five subject areas:
- English Language
- Current Affairs, including General Knowledge
- Legal Reasoning
- Logical Reasoning
- Quantitative Techniques
These subjects do not operate like conventional school subjects where candidates simply memorise chapters. The examination places significant emphasis on reading passages, analysing arguments, interpreting information and answering questions within the context supplied in the paper.
CLAT 2027 Section-Wise Weightage
The exact number of questions in an individual section can vary within the ranges prescribed by the Consortium.
CLAT 2027 English Language Syllabus
The English Language section is designed to test a candidate’s ability to understand and analyse written material rather than merely memorise vocabulary or grammar rules.
Candidates will be given passages of approximately 450 words. These passages may be drawn from contemporary or historically significant fiction and non-fiction writing.
The reading level is intended to be suitable for a Class 12 student who can read a passage in approximately five to seven minutes.
Skills Tested in CLAT English Language
- Understanding the central idea of a passage
- Identifying arguments and viewpoints
- Drawing logical inferences
- Reaching conclusions based on the passage
- Summarising written material
- Comparing different arguments
- Contrasting viewpoints
- Understanding contextual vocabulary
- Identifying the meaning of phrases in context
Important English Topics for CLAT 2027
Although the official syllabus is passage-oriented rather than chapter-oriented, candidates can strengthen the following areas:
- Reading comprehension
- Main idea identification
- Author’s argument
- Author’s tone
- Inference-based questions
- Vocabulary in context
- Sentence interpretation
- Paragraph summary
- Comparative arguments
- Fact versus opinion
- Contextual meaning
- Passage structure
How to Prepare English for CLAT 2027
CLAT English preparation should focus heavily on reading rather than isolated grammar exercises.
Candidates can build the required skills by reading:
- Newspaper editorials
- Long-form journalism
- Magazine essays
- Historical non-fiction
- Literary essays
- Quality fiction
- Opinion pieces
- Analytical articles
After reading an article, candidates should practise identifying its central argument, supporting evidence, opposing viewpoints and conclusion.
Reading speed should be improved gradually without sacrificing comprehension.
CLAT 2027 Current Affairs Including General Knowledge Syllabus
The Current Affairs including General Knowledge section contains passages of up to approximately 450 words.
The passages may be drawn from news reports, journalistic sources and other non-fiction material.
Questions can examine information directly contained in the passage as well as a candidate’s broader awareness of important contemporary developments.
Official Areas Covered in CLAT Current Affairs
- Contemporary events of significance from India
- Major international events
- Arts and culture
- International affairs
- Historical events of continuing significance
Is There a Fixed Time Period for CLAT 2027 Current Affairs?
The Consortium’s CLAT 2027 FAQ states that there is no specific fixed time frame for the Current Affairs including General Knowledge section.
This means candidates should not rely on the assumption that only the previous six months or twelve months will necessarily be relevant.
The better strategy is to follow important ongoing developments consistently and understand their background.
Important Current Affairs Topics for CLAT 2027
Potential preparation areas include:
- Major national developments
- Important Supreme Court and constitutional developments
- Government policies
- Parliamentary developments
- International organisations
- Major geopolitical events
- India’s international relations

- Awards and honours
- Sports developments of national significance
- Arts and culture
- Important anniversaries
- Historical events linked to current developments
- Science and technology developments
How to Prepare Current Affairs for CLAT 2027
Candidates should avoid treating current affairs as a collection of disconnected one-line facts.
A passage-based exam rewards candidates who understand:
- What happened
- Why it happened
- Who is involved
- What institution or law is relevant
- What happened before the event
- Why the development matters
- What could happen next
A good current-affairs note should therefore include both the immediate event and its background.
CLAT 2027 Legal Reasoning Syllabus
Legal Reasoning is one of the highest-weightage sections of CLAT 2027.
It is expected to contain approximately 28 to 32 questions, representing roughly 25% of the paper.
Candidates will receive passages of around 450 words involving legal matters, public-policy questions or moral and philosophical situations.
Do You Need Prior Legal Knowledge for CLAT 2027?
No prior knowledge of law is required to attempt the official Legal Reasoning section.
The Consortium specifically states that candidates should be able to answer questions using principles and information contained within the passage.
However, general awareness of contemporary legal, social and moral issues can help candidates read legal passages more efficiently.
Skills Tested in CLAT Legal Reasoning
- Identifying legal rules or principles in a passage
- Inferring principles
- Applying principles to factual situations
- Understanding exceptions
- Evaluating changes in factual circumstances
- Understanding how a changed rule affects an outcome
- Reasoning through public-policy situations
- Applying abstract propositions
Important Legal Reasoning Areas for Preparation
The examination does not prescribe a conventional list of law-school subjects that candidates must memorise. However, reading around important legal themes can improve familiarity.
Useful areas can include:
- Constitutional rights
- Freedom of speech
- Equality
- Privacy
- Criminal justice
- Contract principles
- Tort-related situations
- Consumer protection
- Environmental law issues
- Technology and privacy
- Artificial intelligence regulation
- Public policy
- Human rights
- Important court judgments
Candidates should not attempt to memorise entire Acts or case-law databases for CLAT UG.
How to Prepare Legal Reasoning for CLAT 2027
The most important skill is learning to separate the legal principle supplied in a passage from a candidate’s personal opinion.
A strong approach is:
- Read the passage carefully.
- Identify the governing rule.
- Identify any exceptions.
- Read the factual situation in the question.
- Apply only the supplied rule.
- Avoid introducing assumptions that are not stated.
- Compare closely worded answer options.
CLAT 2027 Logical Reasoning Syllabus
The Logical Reasoning section contains approximately 22 to 26 questions, accounting for roughly 20% of the paper.
The official syllabus describes short passages followed by questions testing a candidate’s ability to recognise, analyse and evaluate arguments.
Skills Tested in Logical Reasoning
- Recognising arguments
- Identifying premises
- Identifying conclusions
- Analysing patterns of reasoning
- Assessing supporting evidence
- Strengthening an argument
- Weakening an argument
- Drawing inferences
- Applying an inference to a new situation
- Identifying contradictions
- Finding analogies
- Recognising equivalence
- Evaluating argument effectiveness
Important Logical Reasoning Topics for CLAT 2027
Candidates can practise areas such as:
- Premise and conclusion
- Assumptions
- Strengthen the argument
- Weaken the argument
- Inference
- Cause and effect
- Analogy
- Contradiction
- Argument evaluation
- Evidence-based reasoning
- Paragraph logic
- Logical consistency
How to Prepare Logical Reasoning for CLAT 2027
Candidates should focus on understanding the structure of an argument.
Ask three questions while reading:
- What is the author trying to prove?
- What evidence is being used?
- What assumption connects the evidence to the conclusion?
This approach can help solve strengthen, weaken, inference and assumption-based questions more accurately.
CLAT 2027 Quantitative Techniques Syllabus
Quantitative Techniques represents approximately 10% of the CLAT UG paper.
The section is expected to contain around 10 to 14 questions.
Candidates are presented with short sets of facts, propositions or textual representations of numerical information.
They must extract the relevant numbers and perform mathematical operations.
Math Level Required for CLAT 2027
The official syllabus states that candidates should be able to apply mathematical operations at approximately the Class 10 level.
This does not mean candidates need advanced mathematics.
The challenge often lies in identifying the correct data from a passage or dataset before performing the calculation.
Important Quantitative Techniques Topics
- Ratios
- Proportions
- Percentages
- Basic algebra
- Mensuration
- Statistical estimation
- Averages
- Numerical comparison
- Data interpretation
- Tables
- Charts
- Percentage change

Current Affairs including General Knowledge and Legal Reasoning carry the highest approximate individual weightage.
Each accounts for roughly 25% of the paper.
Together, these two sections can account for approximately half of the entire examination.
However, candidates should not ignore English, Logical Reasoning or Quantitative Techniques because the final rank depends on the total score across all sections.
CLAT 2027 Marking Scheme Explained
Each correct answer carries one mark.
Each incorrect answer results in a deduction of 0.25 marks.
This means four incorrect answers effectively cancel the marks earned from one correct answer.
Negative marking makes accuracy extremely important.
Random guessing can lower the final score, particularly when candidates attempt many uncertain questions.
How to Manage Negative Marking in CLAT 2027
- Attempt questions you can solve with reasonable confidence.
- Eliminate clearly incorrect options.
- Avoid purely random guessing.
- Do not spend excessive time on one passage.
- Return to uncertain questions if time remains.
- Practise mock tests using the actual negative-marking rule.

CLAT 2027 Is an Aptitude Test, Not a Memory Test
The Consortium describes UG-CLAT 2027 as a test of comprehension and reasoning abilities necessary for legal education.
This distinction should shape preparation.
Candidates should spend less time memorising enormous amounts of disconnected material and more time developing:
- Reading comprehension
- Critical reasoning
- Inference
- Argument analysis
- Application of principles
- Current-affairs understanding
- Numerical interpretation
How Much Time Should You Spend on Each CLAT Section?
There is no official section-wise time limit.
Candidates can move between sections during the examination, subject to the paper format and examination instructions.
A practical mock-test strategy could initially allocate:
- English Language: 20-25 minutes

- Legal Reasoning: 30-35 minutes
- Logical Reasoning: 25-30 minutes
- Quantitative Techniques: 10-15 minutes
- Final review: remaining time
These are preparation suggestions, not official Consortium time limits.
Best Order to Attempt CLAT 2027
There is no universally correct section order.
Some candidates perform better by starting with their strongest section, while others prefer to begin with Current Affairs because it can often be completed quickly.
A candidate should identify the most effective order through mock-test analysis.
The best order is the one that consistently produces the highest score with the fewest unforced errors.
CLAT 2027 Preparation Strategy
A balanced preparation plan should combine concept building, reading practice, current affairs, sectional tests and full-length mock examinations.
Stage 1: Build Core Skills
- Improve reading speed.
- Strengthen comprehension.
- Learn argument structure.
- Revise Class 10 mathematics.
- Begin daily current affairs.
Stage 2: Sectional Practice
Once the basics are stable, candidates should solve individual section tests under time limits.
Stage 3: Full-Length Mock Tests
Mocks should replicate the official 120-question, two-hour examination environment.
Stage 4: Error Analysis
The value of a mock test comes from understanding why marks were lost.
How Many Mock Tests Should CLAT Aspirants Take?
There is no official required number of mock tests.
Quality matters more than merely completing a large number.
Every mock should be analysed for:
- Accuracy
- Attempt rate
- Section-wise score
- Time spent per section
- Incorrect assumptions
- Careless errors
- Questions left unanswered
- Negative marks
Maintain a CLAT Error Log
An error log can become one of the most valuable preparation tools.
After each test, note:
- Question type
- Your answer
- Correct answer
- Why your answer was wrong
- Whether the issue was knowledge, reasoning, speed or carelessness
- How to avoid repeating the mistake
Patterns often become visible after several mocks.
Daily Reading Strategy for CLAT 2027
Reading is central to almost every CLAT section.
A daily reading routine can include:
- One major national news article
- One editorial
- One international affairs article
- One legal or public-policy article
- One long-form non-fiction piece
Candidates should focus on understanding arguments rather than merely finishing pages.
How to Make Current Affairs Notes for CLAT
For every major event, prepare notes using a structured format:
- Event
- Date
- People or institutions involved
- Background
- Legal or constitutional angle
- International connection
- Important related organisations
- Why the event matters
This creates interconnected knowledge that is more useful for passage-based questions.
Should You Memorise Legal Sections and Case Numbers?
For UG-CLAT Legal Reasoning, extensive memorisation of statutory sections or case citations is generally unnecessary.
The official syllabus states that prior legal knowledge is not required.
Knowing important legal developments may improve reading familiarity, but candidates should prioritise reasoning and application over rote learning.
Should You Study Vocabulary Separately?
Vocabulary remains useful, but contextual understanding is more important than memorising hundreds of isolated difficult words.
Candidates should learn new words while reading passages and note:
- Meaning
- Context
- Synonyms
- Opposite meaning where useful
- How the word changes the tone of a sentence
CLAT 2027 Maths Preparation for Non-Maths Students
Students from humanities or other non-mathematics backgrounds do not need to panic about Quantitative Techniques.
The official level is broadly based on Class 10 mathematical operations.
Start with:
- Percentages
- Ratios
- Proportions
- Averages
- Basic algebra
- Mensuration
- Data interpretation
Regular short practice sessions are generally more effective than occasional long sessions.
CLAT 2027 One-Month Revision Strategy
During the final month before the examination, preparation should shift from learning entirely new material toward consolidation and performance.
- Take regular full-length mocks.
- Revise current affairs notes.
- Revisit recurring reasoning errors.
- Practise quantitative calculations.
- Improve section-selection strategy.
- Reduce careless negative marks.
- Maintain sleep and exam-day routine.
CLAT 2027 Last-Week Preparation
During the last week:
- Avoid completely changing your exam strategy.
- Review high-yield current affairs.
- Revise your error notebook.
- Solve familiar question types.
- Avoid excessive new resources.
- Check admit-card instructions.
- Plan travel to the exam centre.
Common CLAT Preparation Mistakes
- Ignoring the official syllabus
- Using too many study resources
- Memorising law instead of practising reasoning
- Ignoring Quantitative Techniques
- Reading current affairs without background
- Taking mocks without analysing them
- Guessing excessively despite negative marking
- Spending too long on difficult passages
- Neglecting daily reading
- Comparing mock scores without analysing accuracy
How to Improve Reading Speed for CLAT
Reading faster does not mean moving your eyes rapidly while understanding less.
The objective is to reduce unnecessary rereading while maintaining comprehension.
Practise by:
- Reading every day
- Timing long articles
- Summarising passages mentally
- Identifying paragraph purpose
- Avoiding subvocalisation where possible
- Expanding vocabulary gradually
- Reviewing difficult sentence structures
How to Analyse a CLAT Passage
While reading, identify:
- Topic
- Main argument
- Author’s conclusion
- Evidence
- Counterargument
- Tone
- Important qualifiers
- Cause-and-effect relationships
This method can benefit English, Legal Reasoning and Logical Reasoning simultaneously.
CLAT 2027 Tie-Breaking Rule
If two or more candidates obtain the same number of marks, the Consortium’s official UG instructions prescribe the following order for breaking a tie:
- Higher marks in the Legal Aptitude/Legal section
- Higher age
- Computerised draw of lots
This further demonstrates the importance of the Legal Reasoning component.
What Happens After CLAT 2027?
After the examination, the process generally moves through:
CLAT Examination → Answer Key Process → Result → Counselling Registration/Invitation → Preference and Allotment Process → NLU Admission Formalities
The official FAQ indicates that counselling for the 2027 admission cycle is expected around December 2026 and January 2027.
CLAT 2027 Counselling
Qualifying in CLAT does not automatically guarantee admission to a particular NLU.
Seat allotment depends on:
- CLAT rank
- Category
- Reservation policy
- Candidate preferences
- Seat availability
- University-specific eligibility requirements
Candidates should study individual NLU brochures before submitting preferences.

The most important feature of the examination is that it rewards comprehension, reasoning and application more than simple memorisation.
Legal Reasoning and Current Affairs account for roughly half of the paper, but candidates need a balanced preparation strategy because English and Logical Reasoning together account for another substantial portion, while Quantitative Techniques can provide valuable additional marks.
Aspirants should build their preparation around the official syllabus rather than relying entirely on generic coaching topic lists.
Daily reading, current-affairs background research, passage-based reasoning practice, Class 10-level quantitative revision and detailed mock-test analysis can collectively build the skills that the Consortium intends to measure.
With CLAT 2027 scheduled for December 6, 2026, candidates should use the remaining preparation period to move gradually from concept building to sectional practice and finally to timed full-length examination simulations.
The strongest CLAT strategy is not simply to attempt more questions. It is to understand passages faster, make better decisions under time pressure and minimise negative marks while maintaining accuracy across all five sections.
