Bharathiar University, Coimbatore Summary
Bharathiar University is a state public university in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, established by the Government of Tamil Nadu in February 1982 under the Bharathiar University Act, 1981. The institution grew from the University of Madras Postgraduate Centre that had already been functioning in Coimbatore, giving the new university an established academic base from its beginning. It is named after the Tamil national poet Subramania Bharathi and carries the motto “Educate to Elevate.” The University Grants Commission recognized Bharathiar University for grants in May 1985. It operates as both a teaching and affiliating university, with jurisdiction over colleges in Coimbatore, Erode, Tirupur and the Nilgiris. Its academic structure includes faculties and schools in arts, commerce, education, science and social sciences, together with departments in economics, languages, history, biotechnology, educational studies, physical education, communication, computing and other fields. Official university information lists 39 departments and more than fifty postgraduate programmes in addition to research degrees. A major extension of access came through the School of Distance Education, established in the academic year 1991–92. That unit later developed into the Centre for Distance and Online Education and added regulated online programmes alongside open and distance learning. Bharathiar University also built specialist academic units such as the Department of Educational Technology, established in September 1990, and the Department of Education, started in 2012. The university combines campus-based postgraduate education and research with responsibility for a substantial affiliated-college network. Its fourth-cycle NAAC assessment awarded an A++ grade. The institutional profile therefore reflects three connected roles: advanced teaching and research in Coimbatore, academic oversight of affiliated colleges across western Tamil Nadu, and wider access through distance and online education. The university’s affiliated-college jurisdiction gives it an especially important role in western Tamil Nadu, where academic regulation and degree administration are shared across urban, industrial and hill districts.
