The West Bengal University of Health Sciences, Kolkata Summary
The West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS) is a state public health-sciences university based in the Kolkata metropolitan region. Established in 2003, it was created to bring medical, dental, nursing, pharmacy, paramedical, allied health, and other health-professional education in West Bengal under a coordinated university framework. Before its creation, health-science programmes in the state were distributed across different university systems. WBUHS provided a specialized structure for academic regulation, examinations, affiliation, research, and quality development across a large network of health-professional institutions. The university’s role is primarily sector-wide rather than limited to a single teaching campus. Its affiliated and constituent institutions include medical colleges, dental colleges, nursing institutions, and colleges offering paramedical and allied-health programmes. An official annual report recorded 147 courses across 235 affiliated institutions and three constituent colleges, illustrating the breadth of its academic jurisdiction. The constituent structure includes the College of Medicine and JNM Hospital, a university nursing college, and a college for paramedical and allied health sciences. WBUHS also supervises postgraduate and doctoral work and supports research development within the health sciences. A major institutional priority has been modernization of academic administration. The university has pursued digitalization of academic processes and promotes research alongside teaching and examination responsibilities. It obtained UGC 12(B) recognition in 2017, strengthening its position within India’s public higher-education system. Because health-professional education requires coordination among universities, hospitals, regulatory bodies, and clinical training sites, WBUHS occupies an important governance role in West Bengal. Its academic reach extends from undergraduate professional preparation to specialist postgraduate education and research, making it a central institution in the state’s medical and allied-health education network. This statewide structure enables common academic processes across institutions while preserving the clinical and professional character of individual disciplines, from medicine and dentistry to nursing and allied-health education.
