The State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe is a public academy of fine arts in the city of Karlsruhe in Baden-Württemberg. The Staatliche Akademie für Bildende Künste Karlsruhe is a small public academy of art that qualifies fine artists and art teachers through independent studio work, small, professor-led classes and artistic discourse. In its institutional development, 1854 – Grand Duke Friedrich I founded the art school in Karlsruhe. The founding director was the landscape painter Johann Wilhelm Schirmer . Today, its academic profile is characterised by painting, graphic arts, sculpture, intermedial design, artistic research, art history, art theory, art education and subject didactics. Admission is processed at program level. Winter entry applicants apply via HISinOne and are subject to an artistic selection process involving work samples and the academy’s aptitude review; international applicants must additionally provide documentation of qualification equivalence and German proficiency. International School or University Qualifications External evaluation, certified translations, APS documentation where applicable or other proof of academic equivalence may be required. General tuition is free for most first-degree students in the EU and EEA. According to state law, most non-EU students are charged €1,500 per semester and second-degree students €650 in addition to the current semester charges published for enrolment. These institutional fees do not include: rent, health insurance, food, learning materials, residence formalities, project costs or personal travel. If provided for by the relevant law or program regulation, special tuition may be provided for continuing-education, distance-learning, joint, second-degree, or long-term study formats. Funding (e.g. BAföG for eligible students, Deutschlandstipendium, DAAD and Erasmus+ mobility support, foundations, research employment or university-specific awards) is available, but each funding application is evaluated separately from admission.
