RANI RASHMONI GREEN UNIVERSITY Summary
Rani Rashmoni Green University is a state-aided public university in West Bengal created with a distinctive academic mandate around environmental studies, sustainability and interdisciplinary higher education. The West Bengal Legislature passed the West Bengal Green University Act, 2017 in January 2018 to establish the institution, initially under the name West Bengal Green University. Later in 2018, the state amended the legislation and renamed it Rani Rashmoni Green University in commemoration of the social reformer and philanthropist Rani Rashmoni. The university’s statutory vision emphasizes teaching and research connected with environmental studies, biodiversity management, surface and resource management, pollution reduction and related branches of science, arts and law. Its administrative operations are based in Singur, Hooghly, with university functions developing through academic departments, postgraduate programs, research activity and institutional governance. The program portfolio has broadened beyond narrowly defined environmental subjects to include areas such as computer science, mathematics, public health, fishery science, anthropology, management and library and information science. This reflects the university’s intention to approach sustainability through multidisciplinary knowledge rather than through a single environmental discipline. As a young institution, RRGU continues to build faculty, curriculum, research systems and campus resources while establishing its identity within West Bengal’s state-university network. Professor Ashutosh Ghosh served as the founder Vice-Chancellor and led the university through much of its formative institutional phase. The university’s name change in 2018 connected its sustainability-oriented mission with the legacy of Rani Rashmoni. Its Singur location gives the university a regional base in Hooghly while its academic themes address environmental and social questions of wider relevance. The institution continues to develop this role through public higher education, academic administration and student services. Its regional responsibilities remain closely connected with access, quality assurance, research and long-term institutional development. These functions together shape the university’s contemporary academic identity and public-service mission.
