Pillai University is a new private university in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, built on the long educational legacy of Mahatma Education Society. MES began its mission of “Education for All” in 1970 with Chembur English High School and subsequently developed a broad network of institutions across Mumbai and Raigad. Over more than five decades, the group expanded into engineering, management, architecture, arts, science, commerce, education and other professional areas before the university was added to Maharashtra's private-university framework. The higher-education base includes institutions such as Pillai College of Engineering, whose roots go to 1999–2000 and which later achieved autonomous status. The Maharashtra private-university legislation was amended in 2024 to add Pillai University, Navi Mumbai, identifying the Dr. K. M. Vasudevan Pillai Campus in New Panvel as the headquarters and also recognizing a site in Khalapur taluka. The sponsoring body is Mahatma Education Society. Pillai University carries forward this institutional network in a multidisciplinary university format. Its academic offerings span engineering, business administration, architecture, design, computer applications, sports management and postgraduate and doctoral study. The university's defining feature is therefore not simply its recent statutory status but the depth of the education system behind it: a society founded in 1970, decades of college-level experience, mature professional institutions in Navi Mumbai and a new private-university structure designed to integrate those strengths around research, innovation and industry-linked education. The society grew from a single school into a multi-campus network. Pillai College of Engineering traces its institutional beginning to 1999–2000. The engineering college later received autonomous status. Maharashtra legislation added Pillai University to the private-university schedule in 2024. The university headquarters is identified at the Dr. K. M. Vasudevan Pillai Campus in New Panvel. A second university location is recognized in Khalapur taluka of Raigad district. Mahatma Education Society is the sponsoring body.
