Haridev Joshi University of Journalism & Mass Communication Summary
Haridev Joshi University of Journalism and Mass Communication (HJU) is Rajasthan's specialist state university for journalism, media and communication studies, headquartered in Jaipur. The university was constituted through Rajasthan State Legislature Act No. 11 of 2019 to strengthen teaching, training and research in journalism, mass communication and allied fields. It is named after Haridev Joshi, a freedom fighter, journalist and public figure who later served as Chief Minister of Rajasthan and as a Governor in several states. HJU's academic model is deliberately practice-oriented, combining theoretical study with newsroom skills, multimedia production, field work, workshops, internships and engagement with working media professionals. The university has two faculties, Journalism and Mass Communication, and five academic departments: Media Studies, Electronic Media, New Media, Media Organisation and Public Relations, and Development Communication. These units cover print journalism, radio, television, online journalism, social media, communication technology, public relations, corporate communication, development communication and related research. Its programme structure includes undergraduate, postgraduate, postgraduate diploma and Ph.D. study. Specialized diploma offerings include areas such as broadcast journalism, photography and desktop publishing, reflecting the university's emphasis on employable media skills. The Dahmi Kalan campus on Ajmer Road has academic and administrative blocks, a computer laboratory, studio facilities, smart classrooms, lecture halls, library and reading spaces. The university's curriculum also places journalism within wider democratic and social contexts through engagement with law, constitutional rights, ethics, human rights, environment, gender, science and misinformation. This approach is intended to prepare students not only as content producers but as professionals able to understand the responsibilities of media in a diverse society. HJU's specialist focus distinguishes it from general universities where journalism is only one department among many. Because the entire institutional structure is built around communication, students can move across print, broadcast, digital, public-relations and development-communication perspectives.
