VISHWAKARMA SKILLS UNIVERSITY, JAIPUR Summary
Vishvakarma Skills University is a state public skills university in Rajasthan, established to provide employment-oriented, industry-linked and vocational higher education. The institution was originally created as Rajasthan ILD Skills University through Rajasthan Act No. 6 of 2017. It began its academic session in July 2018, developing programs designed around occupational skills, applied learning, entrepreneurship and workforce needs rather than a conventional discipline-only university model. A significant identity change took place in 2023. The Rajasthan Legislature renamed the institution Vishvakarma Skills University through Act No. 16 of 2023, with the change taking effect on 10 August 2023. The University Grants Commission subsequently updated its records to reflect the new name in January 2024. The university’s mandate remains centered on skills education, flexible learning pathways, industry engagement and programs that can connect formal qualifications with practical competencies. Based in Jaipur, the university works across a range of vocational and professional areas and is designed to collaborate with training partners, employers and sector specialists. Its approach emphasizes practical exposure, work-linked learning and curricula intended to respond to changing labor-market requirements. This gives the institution a distinct role within Rajasthan’s public higher-education system: instead of functioning primarily as a traditional affiliating university, it is intended to help build a statewide skills ecosystem and support learners seeking job-focused higher education. The university also has a statutory role in developing standards, assessment and certification for skills-oriented programs within its mandate. Its evolution from Rajasthan ILD Skills University to Vishvakarma Skills University reflects the state’s continuing effort to create a dedicated public institution for technical, vocational and applied learning. Since academic operations began in 2018, the university has moved through an institution-building phase that includes new programs, partnerships, convocation activity and the consolidation of its renamed public identity. This structure makes academic credentials responsive to occupational standards, workplace learning and employer needs.
