Maharaja Surajmal Brij University is a state public university in Bharatpur, Rajasthan, established in 2012 to strengthen higher education across the Brij region. It originated as Brij University, Bharatpur under state legislation and was renamed Maharaja Surajmal Brij University in 2014 to honour Maharaja Suraj Mal, the prominent eighteenth-century ruler associated with Bharatpur. The university functions primarily as an affiliating and teaching institution, serving a large network of undergraduate and postgraduate colleges while developing university departments and research activity at its own campus. Its academic responsibilities include affiliation, curriculum coordination, examinations, results, degree administration and the promotion of higher study across arts, science, commerce, social sciences and other disciplines. The university’s establishment responded to a long-standing regional demand for a separate public university in Bharatpur and reduced dependence on more distant university administrations.
