Kannur University, Kannur Summary
Kannur University is a Kerala state public university created to expand higher education across the northern Malabar region. The institution first came into existence under the name Malabar University through an ordinance promulgated on 9 November 1995. The Kerala Legislative Assembly subsequently enacted Act 22 of 1996, and the university was inaugurated on 2 March 1996. Its statutory objective is to function as a teaching, residential and affiliating university serving Kannur and Kasaragod districts and the Mananthavady area of Wayanad. Kannur University is structurally distinctive because it was conceived as a multi-campus institution rather than a university concentrated at a single site. Its academic facilities and teaching centres are distributed across locations such as Kannur, Kasaragod, Mangattuparamba, Mananthavady, Payyannur, Thalassery and other centres within its jurisdiction. This distributed model allows university departments to serve communities across a geographically wide region. Academic offerings span humanities, languages, social sciences, sciences, technology, management, education, law and interdisciplinary research. The university supports postgraduate and doctoral programmes through its teaching departments while also administering a network of affiliated colleges. Research centres, academic chairs and specialized departments contribute to regional scholarship, including work on history, culture, biodiversity, languages and social questions relevant to north Kerala. Over time, the institution has expanded its campus network and teaching departments while developing examination, digital and student-service systems for both university departments and affiliated colleges. Kannur University's identity is therefore closely tied to regional access: its multi-campus structure was designed to bring advanced study and research closer to students across Kannur, Kasaragod and parts of Wayanad rather than requiring a single centralized university location. This regional model supports teaching departments and specialized centres across multiple campuses, bringing subjects and facilities closer to different communities. The university's departments and affiliated colleges together form a North Malabar network spanning postgraduate education, research, professional study and undergraduate access.
