Goa University, Goa Summary
Goa University is the principal state university of Goa, established under the Goa University Act, 1984 and operational from 1 June 1985. Its institutional roots include the Centre of Post-Graduate Instruction and Research established by the University of Bombay in Panaji in June 1962 after Goa’s liberation. When Goa University began, that centre was merged into the new university and provided an important academic nucleus for postgraduate teaching and research. The university developed its permanent campus on the Taleigao Plateau overlooking the Zuari estuary. It functions as an affiliating-cum-teaching university, supporting campus-based postgraduate and doctoral education while affiliating general and professional colleges throughout Goa. The Taleigao Plateau campus extends across roughly 402 acres. The campus includes academic blocks, central administration, library, hostels, sports facilities and staff housing. Goa University inherited postgraduate teaching traditions from the former CPIR. Academic areas include natural sciences, life sciences, languages, social sciences, commerce and management. Professional affiliation extends to law, engineering, medicine, pharmacy, architecture and fine arts. The university has reorganized several academic areas into interdisciplinary schools. UGC recognizes the university under Sections 2(f) and 12(B). The university supports international-student admissions and exchange activity. Regional research engages with Goa’s society, culture, environment, language and coastal setting. The institution has been recognized as a Multidisciplinary Education and Research University. 1984 — The Goa University Act was enacted as Act No. 7 of 1984. 1 June 1985 — Goa University commenced operations. 1985 — The former CPIR was merged into the new state university. The university developed its permanent academic campus on the Taleigao Plateau. Campus departments expanded postgraduate and doctoral study across arts, sciences and professional fields. Affiliation responsibilities broadened as Goa’s general and professional college system expanded. Academic restructuring created schools by grouping related traditional departments. Goa University’s development connects the state’s post-liberation educational history with contemporary multidisciplinary research.
