MANIPUR UNIVERSITY OF CULTURE Summary
Manipur University of Culture is a state public university in Imphal established specifically for higher education, research and training in art, culture and cultural heritage. The university was created through the Manipur University of Culture Act, 2015, after the state legislature passed the enabling bill and the Governor gave assent on 10 April 2015. The Act was published in the Manipur Gazette in May and came into force on 25 August 2015. The first Vice-Chancellor and Registrar assumed office on 4 December 2015, marking the start of the university's functioning, and the institution was formally inaugurated in August 2016. Its mandate is unusually specialized within Indian higher education. Rather than treating the arts as a small part of a broad university, MUC was designed to place performance, visual culture, cultural studies, heritage and related research at the centre of the institution. Manipur's internationally recognized traditions of dance, music, theatre, martial arts, crafts and community-based cultural practice provide a rich local setting for this work. The university's objectives also extend to ethnic studies, cultural connections with Southeast Asia, academic exchange and advanced study from graduate to doctoral levels. The Government of Manipur allotted a substantial site for the university's long-term development, while academic and administrative activities initially operated through facilities in Imphal, including an extension campus near Canchipur. The institution therefore combines formal university teaching with a preservation mission: documenting knowledge, training artists and scholars, encouraging research and helping living cultural traditions continue across generations. Its position in India's northeast also gives it scope to study cultural interaction across communities and borders. Manipur University of Culture is consequently distinctive for integrating academic scholarship with performance, practice, documentation and heritage stewardship in a dedicated public-university framework. It also creates an academic home for practitioners whose cultural knowledge has traditionally been transmitted beyond formal universities.
