What Does the New Chapter Cover?
According to NCERT's official Grade 9 syllabus, the chapter focuses on five broad themes:
- Safeguarding sovereignty through resistance, alliances and confederacies
- Development of art, architecture, languages and literature
- The Bhakti tradition
- Forts and fortifications
- Expansion of the Indian economy and state
The learning outcomes ask students to understand the political, cultural and military contributions of regional kingdoms and examine how communities and regions responded to changing political and economic circumstances.
Regional Rulers Highlighted in the Textbook
Current reporting based on the newly published textbook says the chapter includes several examples of rulers and communities that resisted competing political powers.
Among those discussed are Queen Naiki Devi of the Chaulukya kingdom, Rani Abbakka Chowta of Ullal and Queen Rudrama Devi of the Kakatiya dynasty.
The textbook reportedly describes Naiki Devi's conflict with Muhammad Ghuri in 1178 and Abbakka Chowta's resistance to Portuguese forces on the Karnataka coast. It also discusses opposition involving the Hindu Shahi rulers, Chandellas, Solankis and Chauhans.
Maharana Pratap, Ahoms and Sikh History Included
The chapter also covers Maharana Pratap and the Battle of Dewair in 1582. According to reporting on the textbook, NCERT presents the battle as an important stage in Mewar's resistance to Mughal expansion.
The Ahom kingdom's conflict with Mughal forces is also included, particularly the Battle of Saraighat in 1671 and the leadership of Lachit Borphukan.
Another section discusses Sikh-Mughal relations, including Guru Arjan Dev, Guru Tegh Bahadur, Guru Hargobind and the development of the concept of miri-piri.
Jat Resistance Also Discussed
The textbook reportedly examines Jat uprisings during the 17th century, including the revolt led by Gokul Jat in 1669 and another uprising in 1686.
Its account connects these developments with economic pressures and the political and religious policies of the period. These descriptions represent the textbook's historical framing and should be read in the context of the full chapter rather than isolated excerpts.
More Than Military History
The new chapter is not limited to wars and rulers. NCERT's syllabus specifically requires students to study art, architecture, regional languages, literature, the Bhakti tradition, trade, economic expansion and fortifications.
This reflects the broader integrated approach of the new Social Science curriculum, where political history is studied alongside economic, cultural and social developments.
What Students Should Know
Students using the revised 2026-27 curriculum should follow the final NCERT textbook rather than summaries based only on earlier draft syllabi.
Understanding Society: India and Beyond – Part 2 was officially released at the end of September and is being distributed through NCERT's authorised channels. The new “Resistance and Resilience” chapter therefore becomes part of the updated Grade 9 Social Science course for schools following the revised NCERT curriculum.
