IISER Bhopal PhD Admission January 2027: Registration Ends October 12

Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Bhopal is accepting applications for PhD admission for the semester beginning in January 2027. Eligible national and international candidates can submit their applications online until October 12, 2026 at 11:59 PM.

The admission cycle covers doctoral opportunities across natural sciences, engineering sciences, economics, humanities and social sciences. IISER Bhopal opened the online application process on September 16.

Who Can Apply?

The exact eligibility criteria vary by department. Under the institute's general PhD eligibility framework, applicants may hold a four-year bachelor's degree in science, engineering or technology, a master's or equivalent qualification in science, or an appropriate master's degree in arts, commerce or allied disciplines.

Departments may additionally require qualifications such as GATE, CSIR-JRF, UGC-JRF, INSPIRE-PhD, NET-LS, JEST or another recognised fellowship or national-level examination, depending on the discipline.

Candidates awaiting the result of an eligible national fellowship examination may also be permitted to apply in certain departments by providing their examination roll number, subject to meeting the required conditions before interview or admission.

Minimum Academic Requirements

Department-specific academic requirements apply. Several programmes specify a minimum of approximately 60% marks or CGPA/CPI of 7.0 on a 10-point scale, while particular categories of candidates may have separate criteria.

For example, some engineering departments provide exemptions from the external test requirement for eligible IIT or IISER graduates with sufficiently high CPI/CGPA. Applicants should therefore check the criteria for the specific department rather than relying only on the institute-wide requirements.

IISER Bhopal PhD Selection Process

Submission of an application does not guarantee an interview. Departments may shortlist candidates based on academic performance, national-level examination scores, research interests and other programme-specific criteria.

Depending on the department, shortlisted applicants may be called for:

• Online or in-person interview
• Department-specific assessment

IISER Bhopal states that shortlisted candidates will be notified by email and the relevant lists will also be published on the institute website.
