On National Technology Day, a new reality is becoming increasingly visible across India: artificial intelligence is no longer just a technology trend — it is becoming a career necessity.
From college students preparing for placements to mid-career professionals upgrading their skills after office hours, Indians are rapidly enrolling in AI and Generative AI programs in hopes of improving employability and future-proofing their careers.
India’s Massive AI Learning Boom
India now has 34.2 million learners on Coursera, making it the platform’s second-largest market globally. The country recorded 21% year-on-year growth in learners.
One of the biggest drivers is Generative AI education. Indian learners are reportedly enrolling in GenAI courses at the rate of:
- 3 enrollments every minute in 2026
- Compared to 1 enrollment every four minutes in 2023
Across campuses and workplaces, AI is increasingly being treated as a foundational workplace skill rather than an optional technical specialization.
AI Is No Longer Just For Engineers
Experts say AI education is now expanding far beyond engineering students.
According to industry leaders:
- Commerce students are learning prompt engineering
- HR aspirants are using AI-based hiring simulations
- Management students are taking AI assessments
- School students are being introduced to AI and computational thinking
Ashootosh Chand said AI is becoming similar to essential workplace tools like Excel and coding.
Ankit Aggarwal noted that students from Tier-2 and Tier-3 colleges are increasingly treating AI as a core career skill.
Meanwhile, Prateek Shukla said 20–30% of recent enrollments at the platform are now coming from non-technical backgrounds.
