NCERT Introduces AI and Computational Thinking Module for Classes 9 to 12
The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has developed an introductory module on Computational Thinking (CT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for students in Classes 9 to 12. The resource is designed for learners with no prior AI knowledge and aligns with the National Education Policy 2020. NCERT has listed the module on its official website as a PDF and flipbook.
The module introduces computational thinking as a structured way to approach problems, then helps students explore how AI works, where it is used and what its limitations are. Its emphasis is on building understanding and judgement—not simply using digital tools. NCERT’s activity-based approach includes discussion, practical exercises, experimentation and reflection. Activities can be conducted with or without digital devices, allowing schools with different levels of technology access to take part.
What the CT and AI Module Covers
| Area | Learning focus |
|---|---|
| Computational thinking | Breaking down problems and approaching them systematically |
| Artificial intelligence | Understanding how AI works, its applications, possibilities and limits |
| Responsible use | Data privacy, fairness, digital safety and ethical choices |
| Information checking | Recognising misinformation and critically verifying AI-generated content |
| Classroom activities | Discussions, exercises, experimentation and reflection, with or without devices |
NCERT says the module aims to strengthen critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving and responsible technology use. It also highlights that human judgement, creativity and ethical responsibility remain important when working with AI. Students can use the lessons to ask how a tool reached an output, what information it may rely on, and whether its response is reliable or fair.
How the Module Fits into the School Year
For CBSE schools, a board circular issued in April 2026 said NCERT would provide CT and AI modules for Classes 9 to 12 for the 2026–27 session, to be used as modules for internal assessment. This gives schools an implementation framework alongside the module’s release. Students should follow their school’s instructions about lesson delivery and assessment, since the circular’s directions apply to CBSE-affiliated schools.
What Students and Teachers Should Know
- Students can access the introductory module through NCERT’s official AI textbook page.
- No previous AI experience is required according to the module description.
- Teachers can use discussion and practical activities; every activity does not require a digital device.
- Schools should follow the relevant board’s current instructions on classroom use and internal assessment.
- Students should practise checking AI-generated information and protecting personal data.
NCERT AI Module Timeline
| Date or period | Development |
|---|---|
| April 9, 2026 | CBSE circular says NCERT will provide CT and AI modules for Classes 9–12 for the 2026–27 session as internal-assessment modules. |
| October 23, 2026 | NCERT announces the introductory module for the secondary stage, Grades 9–12. |
| Academic session 2026–27 | Module is intended to support school learning; CBSE schools should follow board and school-level instructions. |
The NCERT AI and computational thinking module gives older school students a guided introduction to the technology and its limits. Its focus on problem-solving, privacy, fairness and verification can help students approach AI outputs thoughtfully while schools integrate the resource into learning.
