UK University Campuses in India Expand Higher Education Options for Indian Students
Indian students are gaining new ways to earn degrees from UK universities without necessarily moving overseas, as British institutions expand their physical campuses across India. What began with the University of Southampton's Gurugram campus has now developed into a wider network involving universities planning or operating campuses in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Gujarat and other education hubs.
The expansion is part of India's National Education Policy 2020 and the University Grants Commission framework that allows eligible foreign higher-education institutions to establish campuses in the country.

The UK government said in June 2026 that Southampton and Queen's University Belfast had opened international branch campuses in India and that seven additional UK universities had approval to establish campuses during 2026-27.
What Can Students Study?
The India campuses are not simply reproducing every programme available at their UK parent universities. Initial portfolios concentrate heavily on subjects linked to technology, business and growing employment sectors.
For example, the University of Liverpool Bengaluru lists undergraduate programmes including:
- Computer Science
- Computer Science with Software Development
- Business Management
- Accounting and Finance
- Biomedical Sciences
- Game Design
It also lists postgraduate programmes in Computer Science and Accounting and Finance for the 2026 academic year.
The University of York Mumbai has begun teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students in areas including Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence and Cyber Security, Business and the Creative Industries.
Why Could These Campuses Matter for Indian Students?
The biggest change is geographical. Students interested in an international university can now consider studying at an India-based branch rather than automatically relocating to Britain for the entire degree.
This may allow students to remain closer to their families and avoid some of the costs associated with international relocation and living overseas. It can also create access to international curricula, faculty networks, research collaboration and university-industry partnerships within Indian cities.
Some institutions are building international mobility into their India programmes. The University of Liverpool, for example, says India-based students may have opportunities to spend a semester at its UK campus or transfer for their final year, subject to the university's applicable arrangements.
Students Should Compare More Than the University Name
A branch-campus degree should still be evaluated like any major education decision. Applicants should compare:
- Exact degree and specialisation offered in India
- Total tuition and additional costs
- Scholarships and financial support
- Faculty and teaching arrangements
- Laboratory and campus facilities
- Internship and industry partnerships
- Study-abroad or UK mobility options
- Recognition requirements for professional careers
India and the UK have a mutual-recognition framework for academic qualifications, but professional qualifications in fields including medicine, nursing, pharmacy, law, architecture and engineering are outside the scope of that particular agreement and may be subject to separate professional rules.
More Foreign Campuses Are Coming
The expansion is not limited to British universities. India's Ministry of Education reported in August 2026 that the UGC had issued 16 Letters of Intent to foreign institutions from the UK, Australia, Italy and the United States for campuses across locations including Karnataka, Maharashtra, Delhi NCR and Tamil Nadu.
For Indian students, this means the traditional choice between studying at an Indian university and moving abroad is beginning to gain a third option: studying at an overseas university's recognised campus within India.
