CBSE Disaffiliates 20 Schools for Enrolling Dummy Students and Ineligible Candidates
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has taken decisive action against 20 schools, including five in Delhi, for engaging in malpractices such as enrolling dummy students and ineligible candidates. Himanshu Gupta, the secretary of CBSE, announced the disaffiliation of these schools following a surprise inspection aimed at ensuring compliance with affiliation and examination bye-laws. Additionally, three schools' affiliations have been downgraded due to similar violations.

Schools were found to be presenting dummy students and ineligible candidates, while also failing to maintain proper records. The Problem of Dummy Schools
The concept of "dummy schools" has become increasingly problematic. These schools enroll students who do not attend regular classes but appear for board examinations. Many students preparing for engineering and medical entrance exams enroll in such schools to focus solely on competitive exam preparation. This practice, however, has significant drawbacks.
Students in dummy schools miss out on regular schooling experiences, which are crucial for their overall personality development and growth. This issue has been highlighted by education experts and policymakers alike. The recent increase in student suicides in Kota, Rajasthan, a hub for competitive exam coaching, has brought the dangers of dummy schools into sharp focus.
Government and Expert Reactions
Ashok Gehlot, the former Chief Minister of Rajasthan, has been vocal about the issue, referring to dummy schools as "fake schools." He emphasized the detrimental impact these schools have on students' development. "Coaching institutes enroll students in grades 9 and 10. In a way, you are committing a crime. As though the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) were the deity. When students arrive at these coaching institutes, they are enrolled in fake schools," Gehlot stated.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has also acknowledged the problem. In a recent interview, he emphasized the need for serious discussions and deliberations on the issue. "Although the number of such students is not very high compared to the number of students overall... But the time has come to have serious discussions and deliberations on the subject," Pradhan stated.
Implications for Students and Schools
The disaffiliation and downgrading of schools by CBSE send a strong message about the importance of adhering to educational norms and maintaining the integrity of the education system. Schools found guilty of such malpractices face severe consequences, including the loss of affiliation, which can significantly impact their operations and reputation.
For students, these actions highlight the risks associated with enrolling in dummy schools. Such practices not only jeopardize their educational prospects but also hinder their overall development. The emphasis on regular schooling and adherence to academic norms is crucial for fostering well-rounded individuals who are equipped to face the challenges of higher education and beyond.
Conclusion
The CBSE's decision to disaffiliate 20 schools and downgrade three others for malpractices underscores the board's commitment to maintaining the integrity of the education system. This action addresses the growing concern over dummy schools and their impact on students' development. As the education sector continues to evolve, it is imperative that schools adhere to established norms and provide students with a comprehensive and genuine educational experience. The crackdown on malpractices serves as a reminder that educational integrity must be upheld to ensure the holistic development of students across the country.
