IIT Bombay Restores 2015 Exam Misconduct Framework for October Tests After Student Protests
IIT Bombay has put its stricter July 2026 academic misconduct rules on hold and returned to the 2015 framework for pending mid-semester examinations scheduled for October 10 and 11. The Senate’s October 7 decision follows student protests after the September 18 death of a second-year student.
The interim arrangements address how suspected examination misconduct should be recorded and handled. Students accused of using unfair means will be allowed to continue writing on a fresh answer book and have an opportunity to present their account of events.
What Changes Under the Interim Procedure?
Faculty members will document suspected misconduct using a prescribed form. Students can provide their explanation separately, with reporting indicating that completing the student statement is optional. This creates space for the student’s account alongside the invigilator’s observations.
| Area | Reported Arrangement |
|---|---|
| July 2026 misconduct rules | Placed on hold |
| Applicable framework | Return to the April 2015 policy with interim procedures |
| Immediate examination coverage | Pending tests on October 10 and 11 |
| Continuation of examination | Fresh answer book for students facing misconduct allegations |
| Incident documentation | Faculty report and opportunity for a separate student account |
Student Welfare Features in the Response
Reporting on the interim procedure also describes a counsellor alert when suspected misconduct is detected and provisions against frisking. These measures bring student support into the immediate handling of an examination incident.
The policy review took place amid concern about academic disciplinary processes following the student’s death. The circumstances of an individual death should not be reduced to a single presumed cause, and allegations about responsibility require separate investigation.
Does Continuing the Exam Remove Disciplinary Action?
Permission to finish a paper should not be interpreted as a finding that no misconduct occurred. Recording an allegation, hearing the student’s explanation and deciding the outcome are distinct steps. Students should consult the applicable written procedure for how their case will be considered.
Similarly, returning to an earlier framework does not establish that every past penalty has been cancelled. Questions about an existing case require the specific order or communication applicable to that student.
What Students Should Check Before the Tests
- Confirm the examination date, venue and course-specific instructions.
- Read the rules governing permitted materials and electronic devices.
- Check how belongings must be stored before entering the examination room.
- Keep the latest academic-office communication available for reference.
- Know where to request clarification or student support.
Students facing an allegation can ask for the procedure to be explained and provide an accurate account through the permitted channel. Any uncertainty about an instruction is best raised before the examination begins.
What Happens After October 10 and 11?
The immediate arrangements concern the pending examinations. Students should watch for further Senate decisions and academic-office notices explaining the framework for later assessments. A temporary procedure should not be assumed to settle the institute’s longer-term policy without a subsequent announcement.
