How THE University Rankings Are Calculated
The rankings assess research-intensive universities across five major areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook and industry. These broad areas include indicators connected with academic reputation, staff-to-student ratios, research income, citations, international staff and students, industry income and patents.
Research quality carries the largest weight at 30%, followed by teaching at 29.5% and research environment at 29%. International outlook contributes 7.5%, while industry accounts for 4% of the overall score.
What the 2027 Rankings Mean for Indian Universities
India's presence across a broader range of ranking bands highlights the scale and diversity of its higher education system. At the same time, the absence of an Indian university from the global top 200 shows the continuing gap between increased representation and entry into the highest international ranking positions.
Students should also avoid selecting a university solely on the basis of an overall global rank. Subject strength, programme quality, research opportunities, admission requirements, fees, location and career outcomes can differ significantly even between institutions placed in similar ranking bands.
