IIT Delhi Inquiry Panel Gets Second Extension; Report Now Due October 10
The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi has extended the deadline for an external inquiry committee examining the circumstances surrounding the death of an MSc Physics student. The panel, which was expected to submit its findings by September 30, 2026, has now been given until October 10 to complete its inquiry and submit its report.
This is the second extension granted to the committee. The additional time was reportedly required because the panel needed to complete the recording of statements, including repeating some interactions before compiling its findings.
IIT Delhi Inquiry: Key Timeline
| Development | Date |
|---|---|
| Student's death | August 23, 2026 |
| External inquiry announced | August 25, 2026 |
| Committee reconstituted | August 27, 2026 |
| Initial report period | Two weeks |
| First extension | Up to September 30, 2026 |
| Second extension | Up to October 10, 2026 |
| Current report status | Awaited |
Why Was the Inquiry Deadline Extended Again?
The committee did not submit its report by the September 30 deadline. According to the latest reporting, some student statements had to be recorded again, delaying completion of the inquiry. The statement-recording process has now reportedly concluded, with the remaining work focused on compiling the committee's findings.
The extension gives the panel additional time to examine the material collected during the inquiry rather than finalising a report before all relevant statements have been considered.
Who Heads the IIT Delhi Inquiry Committee?
The reconstituted external inquiry committee is chaired by retired Delhi High Court judge Justice Mukta Gupta. The original committee was reworked after its first chairperson, former Uttarakhand Director General of Police Ashok Kumar, recused himself citing personal reasons.
The inquiry framework also includes expertise relating to student welfare and mental health, together with student representation and institutional coordination.
What Is the Committee Examining?
IIT Delhi stated when announcing the inquiry that the committee would examine the circumstances surrounding the student's death comprehensively and identify measures that could further strengthen student-support systems.
- Review circumstances relevant to the incident.
- Interact with relevant students and institutional stakeholders.
- Review existing student-support mechanisms.
- Consider institutional procedures and grievance systems.
- Identify areas where support processes could be strengthened.
- Submit findings and recommendations to the institute.
Student Protests Followed the Incident
The student's death led to protests on the IIT Delhi campus, with students calling for an independent investigation and greater accountability. Students also raised concerns about how welfare and grievance mechanisms function on campus.
The institute subsequently announced an external inquiry and proposed the appointment of an external ombudsperson for student grievances that remain unresolved through existing internal mechanisms.
IIT Delhi Says Student Support Remains a Priority
In its August statement, IIT Delhi said student welfare and mental well-being remained a priority and that the institute intended to strengthen support systems through sustained measures. It also invited students to provide suggestions and concerns regarding existing institutional processes.
The inquiry report may therefore have significance beyond the circumstances of the individual case, as the committee has also been asked to identify measures that could improve student-support systems.
What Happens Next?
The external inquiry committee is now expected to submit its report by October 10. Until the report is completed, conclusions about responsibility, institutional lapses or the causes surrounding the student's death should not be treated as established findings.
The committee's final report is expected to set out its findings and recommendations after reviewing statements and relevant institutional processes. Any subsequent measures will depend on the contents of that report and decisions taken by IIT Delhi after its submission.
