Can International Students Apply?
International applicants may be eligible, but important conditions apply. Candidates who do not hold Canadian citizenship or permanent residence, or who do not satisfy the applicable Québec health-insurance requirement, must undertake their doctoral training in Québec.
Such applicants must provide either:
- Proof of admission to a doctoral programme at a Québec university, or
- The required consent form from a research supervisor based at a Québec university.
These candidates must normally maintain their training in Québec during the scholarship period and cannot use the award for a joint doctoral arrangement with a university outside Québec under the restricted-status provisions.
Which Research Fields Are Covered?
The FRQ doctoral programme supports research across the organisation's major research sectors, including:
- Natural sciences
- Mathematics
- Engineering and technology
- Human health
- Humanities
- Social sciences
- Arts and literature
The regular B2 stream is intended for students beginning or continuing a research doctorate leading to a PhD and involving the completion of a thesis.
How to Apply for the FRQ Doctoral Scholarship
- Create or access an account on the FRQnet portal.
- Open the Doctoral Research Scholarship B2 application.
- Select the correct research sector and evaluation committee.
- Complete the required application sections.
- Upload all mandatory supporting documents.
- Check that transcripts and supporting records meet FRQ requirements.
- Submit the application before 4:00 PM on September 29.
At the deadline, the application status in FRQnet must show that it has been submitted to the Fonds. Applications remaining in another status are not considered successfully submitted, and documents cannot normally be added after the deadline.
Application Language Requirement
Applicants should also note an important language requirement. The FRQ states that the funding application form must be completed in French. Supporting documents attached to the form may generally be provided in either French or English, subject to the programme's formatting rules.
When Will Results Be Announced?
The FRQ expects to announce results in late April 2027, with successful awards beginning in the 2027-28 funding year.
Applicants should carefully review the full programme rules before submitting, particularly international candidates whose eligibility depends on studying at a Québec institution. With the September 29 deadline now approaching, candidates should avoid waiting until the final hours to upload documents or resolve FRQnet account issues.
