India–New Zealand FTA Brings New Work Visas and Longer Post-Study Rights for Indians
The India–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA) came into force on October 20, 2026, introducing new work visa pathways and expanded study-to-work commitments for Indian citizens. The changes may interest skilled professionals, students planning to study in New Zealand and young people looking for temporary work and travel opportunities. Applicants must still meet New Zealand’s immigration requirements; the agreement does not make a visa automatic.
New Zealand Work Visas for Indian Professionals
The agreement introduces two Temporary Employment Entry visa categories: the India Skilled Work Visa and the India Iconic Work Visa. Together, the pathways allow up to 5,000 visa holders in New Zealand at one time. The skilled pathway focuses mainly on occupations identified on New Zealand’s Green List. The iconic pathway covers a limited group of professions associated with India, including yoga instructors, Indian chefs, music teachers and AYUSH practitioners.
| FTA pathway | Who it is for | Key details |
|---|---|---|
| India Skilled Work Visa | Indian professionals in eligible skilled occupations | Part of the combined 5,000-holder limit; stay of up to three years |
| India Iconic Work Visa | Eligible applicants in specified India-associated professions | Part of the combined limit; stay of up to three years |
| Working holiday scheme | Indian citizens aged 18 to 30 | Planned within two years; up to 1,000 places annually and stays of up to 12 months |
Eligibility and Application Conditions
Applicants for the new employment pathways need a qualifying job offer from an accredited employer. They must also meet requirements relating to qualifications, English language ability, health, character and identity. The visas allow temporary employment for up to three years and do not provide a direct pathway to residence. Candidates should check the specific occupation list and application instructions before making plans.
- Confirm that your occupation is covered by the relevant visa category.
- Secure a qualifying offer from an accredited New Zealand employer.
- Check the qualifications, English and other requirements for your role.
- Review official visa instructions before paying fees or submitting an application.
Post-Study Work Rights for Indian Graduates
The FTA also sets out expanded post-study opportunities. Indian students completing eligible STEM bachelor’s or master’s programmes may qualify for post-study work visas of up to three years. From November 16, 2026, Indian graduates who earn a PhD in New Zealand will become eligible for post-study work visas of up to four years, compared with the previous maximum of three years.
Eligible students of all nationalities, including Indians, can currently work up to 25 hours per week while studying. The agreement commits to a minimum of 20 hours weekly for Indian students if New Zealand changes its policy settings. Students should verify the rules in force when they apply.
