The DSH is an advanced German-language examination administered by registered German universities and Studienkollegs. It includes written and oral examinations and awards DSH-1 from 57%, DSH-2 from 67%, and DSH-3 from 82%. DSH-2 satisfies the language requirement of most German-taught university programs.

TestDaF is an advanced German-language examination accepted by German higher-education institutions. It evaluates reading, listening, writing, and speaking at approximately B2–C1. Many German-taught programs require TDN 4 in all four sections. Candidates can choose between digital and paper-based formats, with fees and schedules varying by location.

German-taught university programs commonly require advanced German at B2 or C1, demonstrated through TestDaF, DSH, telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule, DSD II, Goethe certificates, or another approved qualification. Studienkollegs generally require B1 or B2, while fully English-taught programs may not require German for admission. University and visa requirements must be checked separately.

International students can apply to selected universities in Germany without IELTS by using a Medium of Instruction certificate, an English-taught previous degree, TOEFL, Cambridge English, or another approved qualification. Exemptions are program-specific, and university admission requirements must be checked separately from German student visa rules.

IELTS is not universally compulsory for studying in Germany. English-taught programs frequently require IELTS Academic or another recognized form of English-language proof, while German-taught programs generally require German proficiency. University admission and visa requirements must be checked separately, especially by Indian applicants relying on an IELTS waiver or Medium of Instruction certificate.
