University of Prince Edward Island History

The University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) has a rich history that dates back to the early 19th century. It was officially established in 1969 through the amalgamation of three institutions: Prince of Wales College (founded in 1860), the University of Prince Edward Island, and the Atlantic Veterinary College. The merger brought together various educational traditions and resources, forming a unified institution dedicated to providing higher education on Prince Edward Island. Prince of Wales College was originally founded as a liberal arts college and played a significant role in the educational landscape of the region. In 1969, it merged with the University of Prince Edward Island, which had been established in 1969, creating UPEI. This consolidation aimed to strengthen academic offerings and provide a broader range of programs and services to students. The Atlantic Veterinary College, established in 1986, became an integral part of UPEI, adding a specialized focus on veterinary science and contributing to the university’s reputation in research and professional education.
