University College of Northern Denmark (UCN) Summary

University College of Northern Denmark is a public university college in Denmark. It serves North Jutland and is one of the main institutions of professional higher education in the northern part of Denmark. UCN focuses on practice-oriented higher education, applied learning, professional bachelor education, academy profession degrees, continuing education, research, development and innovation in fields such as health care, education, social education, business and technology. It is not a classical research university like Aarhus University or the University of Copenhagen. Instead, UCN is for students who want a professional education that leads directly to employment, internships, real-world cases, practice placements and regional industry needs.

UCN has campuses in Aalborg, Hjørring and Thisted. Aalborg is one of Denmark’s largest university cities, and provides students with an active education environment, companies, health services, public institutions, cultural life and regional employers. UCN’s regional presence will be consolidated by Hjørring and Thisted, and professional education will be linked to communities throughout North Jutland. This regional structure is important because UCN educates professionals needed by local businesses, hospitals, municipalities, schools, welfare institutions and technology-related workplaces.

The UCN academic profile at undergraduate level includes professional bachelor and academy profession programs in business, health care, education, social education and technology. Study areas include Nursing, Midwifery, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Radiography, Teacher Education, Social Education, Architectural Technology & Construction Management, Computer Science, Export & Technology Management, International Hospitality Management, Marketing Management, Automation-related technology, laboratory-related study, service & business development. These are practical programs that prepare students for real jobs in the professional sectors.

One thing must be said very clearly for international students: UCN states at the moment, it is not possible to study a full degree program as an international student. This means that applicants, who want to pursue a full English-taught bachelor's or professional degree at UCN, should not rely on old program lists or outdated third-party pages. Instead, the exchange possibilities at UCN should be the focus for international students. UCN has exchange programmes of one semester in business, social education, health and technology studies. These exchange options are normally for students already enrolled at the partner or home institution, and who are nominated for mobility.

There is no broad research master’s portfolio at the traditional postgraduate level at UCN. It is primarily professional higher education, continuing professional development, applied research and practice-oriented knowledge production. Graduates with a relevant professional bachelor education can apply to external master's degree programs at Danish or international universities provided they meet the admission requirements of the receiving university. The progression is subject to the content of the degree, ECTS, academic level, language requirements and regulations of the university the student applies to.

UCN does not offer traditional PhD programs at PhD level. However, UCN produces practice-related knowledge in health care, education, business and technology. The research and development activities are aimed at improving study programs and benefit professionals and businesses. To pursue the doctoral pathway, students must first earn an eligible master’s degree from a university and then apply to a PhD program at an approved research university.

Overall, University College of Northern Denmark is most suitable for Danish-speaking full degree students, exchange students from partner institutions and learners who want applied professional education in North Jutland. It is a strong institution for practical learning, regional employment preparation, professional development and workplace-connected education but is not a full-degree destination for international applicants at this time.
