Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU; IAST: JavΔharalΔla NeharΕ« ViΕvavidyΔlaya) is a public research universi located in Delhi , India. It was established in 1969 and named after Jawaharlal Nehr, India's first Prime Minister. The university is known for leading faculties and research emphasis on social sciences and applied sciences.

Since 2001, the Centre has developed special collaborative programs with the Institute for Sociology, Albert Ludwig, University, Freiburg, Germany and the Kwazulu Natal University, Durban, South Africa. The University of Cape Town, Cape Town, South Africa, FLACSO Argentina and the Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand have also become associated with us since 2008-2009. The 9th batch of the Global Studies Program arrived in India on January 2011. It includes 20 students from 14 countries including USA, the Netherlands, Colombia, Hungry, Bulgaria, Germany, Kazakhstan, Brazil, Sweden, Argentina, Ghana, Mexico, Nepal and India.

Jawaharlal Nehru University is the foremost university in India, and a world-renowned centre for teaching and research. Ranked number one in India by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a Grade Point of 3.91 (on a scale of 4), JNU was ranked no 3 among all universities in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework, Government of India, in 2016 and no 2 in 2017. JNU also received the Best University Award from the President of India in 2017.
Still a young university, established by an act of Parliament in 1966, the strength, energy, and reputation of Jawaharlal Nehru University result from the vision that ideas are a field for adventure, experimentation and unceasing quest, and that diversity of opinions are the basis for intellectual exploration. JNU is the place for the intellectually restless, the insatiably curious, and the mentally rigorous, giving them the space to grow amidst the calmness of an oasis, a green lung within the hustle and bustle and the crowds of the capital city of India.
Coming into being in 1969, three years after its establishment by Parliament, JNU brought frontier disciplines and newer perspectives for old disciplines to the Indian university system. The excellent teacher-student ratio at 1:10, the mode of instruction which encourages students to explore their own creativity instead of reproducing received knowledge, and of exclusively internal evaluation, were also new to the Indian academic landscape and have stood the test of time. The very Nehruvian objectives embedded in the founding of the University β βnational integration, social justice, secularism, the democratic way of life, international understanding and a scientific approach to the problems of societyβ, had built into them constant and energetic endeavour to renew knowledge through self- questioning.

JNU, New Delhi History
Jawaharlal Nehru University was established in 1969 by an act of parliament. It was named after Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister. G. Parthasarathy was the first vice-chancellor.Prof. Moonis Raza was the Founder Chairman and Rector. The bill for the establishment of Jawaharlal Nehru University was placed in the Rajya Sabha on 1 September 1965 by the then-Minister of Education, M. C. Chagla. During the discussion that followed, Bhushan Gupta, member of parliament, voiced the opinion that this should not be yet another university. New faculties should be created, including scientific socialism, and one thing that this university should ensure was to keep noble ideas in mind and provide accessibility to students from weaker sections of society. The JNU Bill was passed in Lok Sabha on 16 November 1966 and the JNU Act came into force on 22 April 1969.The Indian School of International Studies was merged with the Jawaharlal Nehru University in June 1970. Following the merger, the prefix "Indian" was dropped from the name of the School and it became the School of International Studies of the Jawaharlal Nehru University.
